Here's my dream scenaro. Call me crazy, I've had a lot of coffee this morning. But if the Hawks could find a way to deal some package of Strome and Nylander and a D (Matta/Gus) pick to NYR for Kreider, and another deal of Lehner and a pick to Detroit for Athanasiou (if Detroit can agree on contract prior to trade) lines could look something like this....

If no value is realized through the available cap space, that might also be failure Go to cap friendly and sort by "Current Cap Space" (far right column). There 15 teams with more than $10mil in current cap space. So Hawks are just one option to dump salary.

I like Saad, but isn't a consistent 50 point player, at least in his 2 Blackhawks stints. He's only cracked 50 points 3 times in parts of 8 seasons, two of those times in Cbus. As a matter of fact, he'll be 3 years removed from his last 50 point season when this season wraps up. He's a good 200 foot player, a borderline 2d liner but has produced at a 3rd line rate since he came back here and is overpaid at $6M and has limited movement in his last year of his contract next year. He's a good pk'er but doesn't have the hands for the pp. I think he's more well regarded here than around the league at his contract $$...

Meanwhile, Carolina still hasn't made a move for a goalie or a D.

I would think Newhook as a target b/c they are probably praying Byron Bowen DOES learn to play defense, and Jost STILL has plenty of upside and they could be embarrassed if he blossoms four seconds after he is traded....

Not enough for Saad for me - a (probably) low first - low probability that the 2nd and 3rd would ever get here. And even the 1st would probably only be as good as Saad - cheaper, yes, and under control for longer, but probably not any better a player.

For Saad, I would expect 2 positions to be covered - a 1st and a good prospect.

Otherwise, I'm very good on keeping him.

This crossed my mind as well, but the only way I see that happen is IF he signs an extension prior to hitting FA. Otherwise, he'd definitely top Kreider because that will likely be his bar AND you had in the FA market price he'd probably get in that 7-8M range
