60 goals, 100 points isn't elite? He's also 3rd in takeaways in the NHL - RogerRoeper
Your first statement referred to our "players". You are defending that by using ONE player, our best player. What about the rest of the guys?
Matthews is on pace to be 11th in the league is scoring at 56g/95pts. That pace would have had him 11th last year also.
If top 11 is your definition of "elite" then great, it still doesn't make your statement reasonable.

As bad as Andersen was during that game, there was a golden opportunity to score 10 to 12 goals on a team using a 42 year old zamboni driver for the last half of the game. Two of three shots directed at the net in the second period went in! A couple of slow dribblers towards the net would have been fine. The problem was the Leafs as a team were unwilling and unable to float a few towards the net. Didn't need the Harlem Globetrotters making highlight reel passes. Needed a curling rock shovelled towards the net and then have a couple of guys sweeping - winsix
Andersen wasnt that bad. 1 goal was bad. |

Keefe acknowledged it after the game. Paraphrasing here, but he said "we lost before the goalie switch to Ayres" - PatC80
I’m not blaming what I’m about to say on the loss because I know people like to say that after criticism over a player.
But Dermott scoring on his own net isn’t talked enough in that game. The new goalie just comes in down by 2...and Dermott puts the puck in his own (frank)ing net.
Talk about a momentum killer. |

3rd highest in cap hit. I don’t think he’s even top-10 in cap hit percentage.
He’s worth every penny.
Trade Mitch Marner, please. |

I agree with this. The point is that the superstars aren't executing like superstars. Matthews has been elite.
At 5v5, Tavares is -6 in goal differential; Marner is -5. If we want to throw his name into the mix, Nylander is +4. Again, in much the same situations, Hyman is +3.
Matthews, as noted, is +17.
We need more out of Tavares and Marner in particular, and to be honest, Nylander, too.
Any +/- metric has it's limitations, but again when compared to the team as a whole, particularly when you have an idea of the level of competition faced, it gives you a decent picture: Marner and Tavares are not executing at the level they are expected to execute at. - Monkeypunk
It is a combination of a lot of things it seems. The stars are not producing up to expectations, and the fact that we have so much tied up at the top end means that we had to go with a lot of cheap and entry level talent everywhere else. On top of that, goaltending has been poor and injuries have been a problem.
It's not exactly the season we had all hoped for |

Oh for sure, that was a momentum killer, lucky bounces happen in games.. What was frustrating to me, and maybe it's because they felt bad for Ayres, but they refused to just shoot the puck. Shoot from anywhere.. There is no need to look for a perfect play.
Carolina played great in the 3rd, but I wish the Leafs upon entering the zone would put the puck on net and storm the crease.. |

He wasnt as bad the rest of the team, he was just ok. 1 bad goal, one goal by a teammate.
The rest of the team wasnt anywhere close to ok.
They were embarrassing.
But it matters not, I didnt expect the team to replicate that game against the pens. I figured they'd lose saturday night.....until the zamboni driver got in the pipes....then I thought they would win and it would be a nothing game.
Instead its made them the laughing stock of the league...again. |
