We need to play that way, seems better then giving up 10 breakaways/game.
- Garnie

I think not shooting is at least partially on the coach and player selection. Marner for example is overplayed. While he has been very effective killing penalties, he really sucks on the power play. The biggest reason is his aversion to shooting the puck. It's up to the coach to put players on the ice that have high shot totals and are willing to do anything to get a shot on goal. It was the (frank)en zamboni driver. 3 shots in the second period and 5 in the final period. If you are too cowardly to let it fly inside the offensive zone, shoot from centre ice

Our PP is #1 in the NHL and Marner's minutes are not that high.

This is stuff that only the Leafs can get crap for

Pretty good assets management here by Bergevin these last few months.

Turned a 4th rounder and a 700k contract into a 2nd and a third (+conditional 4th).

Just need to draft the right players now.... which hasn't been our forte the last 10 years.

But they are not available.

This team is in the playoffs. It's not a mess at all.

- RogerRoeper

They are available, but usually in the off season, under the right circumstances...

For example: Seth Jones... traded from Preds to Columbus...

It's funny because Simmons was the one media guy to stand up to Babcock's horrific playoff coaching

Such a rare occurance though. Marner is so good there's only 1-2 DMen i'd trade for him (Seth Jones being one)

Bergevin's trades are not bad at all. His drafting is so terrible though.

Who’s the other?

It can happen. The other team just has to want a change. You also need to be willing to go ‘all in’ on a trade like that...

Let's keep our elite talent. It's never turned out well trading them.

No question, some times you need to tip your hat to the other team.

I don't think that entirely explains Saturday though. It is pretty tough to escape the conclusion that this team has something fundamentally wrong.

- Aetherial

at this point there is really no other conclusions.

Marner is -5 at Even Strength.

He has had a bad season. He is not working as hard as he did last year and his defensive awareness has left him far too often this year. Teams are recognizing that the Leafs' offense is largely driven by Marner getting and distributing the puck, and they key in on him and they take away his time and space - and he hasn't adapted well yet. I have faith that he'll make the necessary adjustments, but right now he's a negative player at 5v5 play, and it shows.

- Monkeypunk

Agree, and the fact that he makes almost 11 million, puts the onus on him to bring the goods, which he simply hasn't. His work on the power play has been pathetic. I don't know how many times he has been in a perfect spot to shoot in the slot only to kill a scoring chance by making a pass to the corner to AM.

We need to get over the cap hits of our players. They are producing at elite levels. Our main competitor's for the playoffs signed a 32 year-old goalie at 10 million per with a sub 900 save %.

Stop with the koolaid for a second.
This was suppose to be a top 5 team in the league in the eyes of most.
They aren't.
They are 2pts in a playoff and only because florida is trying their best not to make the playoffs and the other half to the Atlantic are complete garbage.
Their defensive play is offensive to watch, they cant defend their zone in consecutive games if their life depended on it, they've been hamstrung by injuries, the goalie has been playing below his usual team mvp performance.

Its a bit of a mess right now.
But not end of the world.

Could still turn it around.

No don't trade Marner, sit him down and find out if he has a problem. If he plays the penalty kill, keep him off the power play. He makes big boy money, time to put on big boy pants and play like a big boy. The belly flop on the power play .... OMG

A huge difference. i was always on the side of Matthews being the better player, but the gap has very much widened this season

We need to get over the cap hits when it doesn't suit your argument.

If Florida had the cap space to sign Bobrovsky, then that's their situation. If Bob rebounds and has 6 good seasons after this disastrous one, it'll be a genius move. If Bob never rebounds, it's Florida's problem to deal with.

Self assessment doesn't work when you're looking at someone else.

We have a lot of money tied up in just a few players. If those players aren't executing, then that's OUR problem to deal with.

Nope, where he was a top 7 goalie in the league.
But of course that is the only thing that stood out to you.

Matthews is the best 5 on 5 goal scorer the NHl has seen since Eric Lindros almost 3 decades ago. He is a stud and Marner won't ever be in his league in that regard.
