This excerpt above from the article conveniently leaves out the quality, young veteran players that were already on the Leafs roster, such as JVR and Kadri, when they cratered. That is a massive help to the young players, as it allows them to play supporting roles instead of being relied on to carry the entire load of the team. Eichel for example, having to do nearly everything.

Probably not. Here's the situation: JB really can't trade guys for futures or accept crap for futures because he has to sell the narrative that we're close. So he'll trade a bum or two and say the prices were too damn high to acquire anything good

JB is so buttoned up, nobody will ever hear about his trades until they happen. Unless that is, fans’ impatience needs to be quelled. Then you hear about how hard he’s working the phones.

The smart move would be to maximize the $8.4M in cap space to increase the return on a trade, and the time do that is not waiting until Monday, as making that sort of move today will allow the other team the ability to make another move with the added cap space.

Its an example, you are taking it too literally. Not to mention you can't remember the difference between 3 years and 6 years.

Sources say I really tried to make a move today, it’s hard though. This takes time.
