Matthews is the issue.

He's one of the most talented players in the league but he is no leader. In fact, I would bet that the leader on the team is actually frustrated with Matthews and there will one day, likely soon, be a rivalry/battle between Matthews and Tavares.

I will also bet that Matthews moves to the USA as soon as he is able to (UFA).

There is no question that Matthews needs to pay some more attention, and put in some more effort on defense.

To suggest "he" is the problem, is ridiculous. The problem is team-wide. Every single player needs to be better, needs to work harder, and needs to pay attention at both ends of the ice.

I am pretty sure that neither Matthews, nor the coaches, are telling everyone to be soft on the puck, never finish a check, lose their man in the defensive zone etc.

Not gonna back read but.....Andersen needs to be better and the leafs team needs to put in more effort and try to have some sort of team defense. They are absolute garbage in their own end and its not even debatable.

Yeah, for sure. I can't find the tweet but somebody extrapolated standings for the top 5 teams in the league if they had Leafs goaltending this year and it wasn't pretty.
