Your point is hard to argue against, the team didn't get it done on this road trip. If I was the GM, I'd now look to get what extra value I could by trading 1 or more guys.

I would then tell the team/fans, 'hey, we're 50 games into the season and it's clear we're not yet at the level of a playoff team, so while there was still time left, trying something different (i.e. playing a different younger mix) perhaps could put us into the playoffs. If not, at least we gained knowledge of how these other guys could perform in the future, so either way, we've moved the team forward'

... or something like that.

- Re-sign Gus for $3+M AAV for another 3 years
- Fail to re-sign Lehner as well as fail to trade either him or Crawford, netting ZERO

- Announce he was re-upped as GM for another X# of years
- Confirm his reoccurring potato chip order with Amazon, upping its frequency to daily

LA has come out and admitted to their players, Doughty/Kopitar, they are rebuilding. THey have sold guys like Torfoli, Martinez

Hawks are still retooling on the fly...trying to figure out the right formula to get the aging core back to the dance. That's why guys like Keith, Crawford, and some others haven't been shipped off.

2nd paragraph- many different ways to rebuild, both teams are doing so. Look at the Hawks roster at the end of 2018. I get you want to torch the joint, but that doesn't mean they aren't rebuilding.

Zack Smith has a cheap buyout cost. Olli Maatta does, also. Check it out. That makes both players more tradable than they otherwise would be.

Oh I don't want to torch it entirely.....

I don't disagree with you and others posts about the lag time it takes from entirely tearing it down and trying to figure out the correct formula. Look at the Hawks themselves...post lockout they had a very heavy roster that wasn't sufficient in "the new" Nhl.

Same holds true for the perennial bottom feeders. The key to me is just picking the new "core" and building around them through the draft and savvy trades. Yes, easier said then done but not impossible.

IMO. they are lacking in defensemen and quality depth scoring. I think its fair to listen on everyone but they also need patience. WIth Strome, if he and his agent want DeBrincat money they can get lost.

As far as goalie goes.....I think Lehner is THE guy if term and AAV are there. I would say 4 years at 7, if he wants 5 years it's less then 7 AAV. IF he wants north of 7 and longer then 4 years, you deal him.

I think Lehner is an excellent goalie but this team can't afford 7-8 years and a massive cap hit. The guy will be a shell of himself in 3 years when they are hopefully ready to make a run in the playoffs.
