I think Schultz is going to have a smaller cap hit next year wherever he ends up...and I cant see him getting much term after the last few seasons either. 2 years @ 4 mill per or around there is my best guess. Am I out to lunch to think this?

Your thoughts?

Maybe. Pietrangelo, Barrie and Vatanen are the only UFA's worth a damn this summer so who knows. Edit - I forgot Shattenkirk.

The biggest thing here is how do other teams view Schultz. While most of us here are probably in agreement that he's just not as good was he was his first couple of years with the Pens. Does that mean other teams don't view him as a valuable player? Nope. You never know what other GM's value or see in a player as far as how they will fit on their team.

Moving Schultz would no doubt be easy. What's not easy is finding the right return or at least a trade that makes sense for the Pens. RW mentioned Hoffman. Depending on how FLA's situation plays out and cannot land a solid dman with term, and IF they do view Schultz as a dman who makes sense as a rental, I do think a Hoffman/Schultz swap makes sense.

Obviously a lot of IFS here, but that's how it goes.

Over Kreider? I havent seen much of Domi to gather an opinion.
- nateca44

Yeah for the fact that I dont see Krieder being THAT much better, if at all, than Domi but Domi is 4 years younger and a RFA instead of an UFA after this season. Also Domi plays a lot of C which I think could be beneficial.

DeMelo is the best bang for buck RD UFA IMO.

I'd agree with that. He isn't the offensive punch to get the big UFA bucks, but he is certainly a good possession guy. I doubt Winnipeg lets him walk though. I think they get a deal done. They need to.

GMJR on NHL.com just said the Pens are looking for a depth forward. Injury updates later this week on Dumo and Marino will tell whether or not they need another D. Isn't trading any goalies. Wasn't directly asked about moving another member of the roster, but it sure sounds like he and sullivan are very happy right now with this lineup.

Depth forward...so most likely bottom 6 guy. I think this guy should be capable of C and wing...

That doesn't explain how the call up can be emergency. You have to have less than 12 forwards, 6 d, and 2 goalies.
- burgh4life87

I have no idea then. They definitely said emergency call up.

I think schultz will get a couple years similar to what he gets now simply due to inflation of the cap. He’s no letang but he can be an offensive Pp RD. With his own dumo somewhere I could see him doing really well. If you ask Toronto fans Barrie is garbage and not worth a damn thing. I think with Schultz the injuries are his issue with his next contract but I think he will get a decent one somewhere.

Well, he's not exactly tracking the right since he's behind schedule. At this point I can't see him coming back any time before March and I think that's being hopeful. If he's only skating for a half an hour right now, I have to think he's still a good three or four weeks away.

This is from a Rangers fan. I like Kreider. Seems like the 5th is a bit much to me but, Id do it, but id turn it into a 3rd if it was contingent on him resigning with the pens.

If we didn’t trade for Zucker I would like it. I like Kreider’s style. Especially his running over of goalies.. except when he used to do it to maf. Now if we could find a similar right wing I’m in.

Personally I'd only go for a rental if the cost was low-ish; 3rd + Prospect or maybe a 2nd if it's a serious impact player. I would prefer JR tries his best to make a trade for a player with term. If they realistically had a shot at Tatar, Palmieri or possibly Saad I'd be be fine with them giving away a 1st and change.

That being said, that Ranger deal would be more than I'd hope to give up for a rental, but it does solve a lot of issues and I'd much rather give up Hallander than Poulin or Legare.
