This.
Not many D are actually available.
Or they are and teams haven’t traded for them the past 5 years
If one can be had and it fits a glaring weakness pull the trigger and get your guy. - Santo_44
Kinda jealous of that Tampa McDonagh trade right about now |

Team defense is the issue. These kids can't stick to the plan. - Fakepartofme
I think so. Last night, Buddy offers up the idea that almost all the Leaf forwards were elite scoring drivers in their junior careers. They dominated puck possession and never really learned defensive responsibilities. Buddy thinks it is not enough to ask the young guys to play D. They need to be progressively taught how to play in their own end.
So, I watched with that in mind. Buddy points out how quickly the Leaf forwards break out of the defensive zone like racehorses but, before they achieve full puck possession and how easily Pittsburgh dominated the neutral zone. Obviously the coaches understand what is happening. Just a matter of time for these guys to master their defensive roles.

I'm a fan - Lucas.Neilson
He’s a good D man that’ll likely fit with this group.
The Barrie comparison is stupid. Barrie gets sheltered a lot.
Before this season Dumba faces elite competition every game and faired well.
He has term and at 25 there won’t be age regression which is important here. |

I wanted the Leafs to get him.
I didn’t care that they were too young. Get him and give yourself the best chance to sign him. He’s a fantastic D. |

One is in his 3rd year on a crappy team, the other is one what many thought was a cup contender.
But agrees, 8 million is a big number. - Fakepartofme

Seems like there is some divide on Dumba in here....this is going to be great when the Leafs trade for him - Santo_44
I dont care either way.
Hes not the answer.
But if dubas gets him on the cheap, then whatever. More of what we have. |

Marner is going to go through stretches where he gets 3 points in 6 games. So is every star player.
The players under him have to step it up in those situations and it just hasn’t been the case.
Kap has 1 goal in his last 20 games and it’s not from being unlucky. The guy hasn’t given a (frank). - Santo_44
Well actually ..
In last 20 games Kapanen has 2 ES goals ...
Marner has 3 ES goals in his last 20. |

Didn't Tampa gave up a first rd pick and a 2nd rd pick, plus 2 good prospects for McDonagh? I'm not sure we could have matched that |

The fact that the Leafs have allowed as many goals as the Sens despite having strong possession numbers suggests a larger systemic flaw in their overall game concept.
I don't think if you added an all star Dman to the Leaf roster it would make that much difference in terms of the overall result. Forwards have to come back and support the D in their own end.

Odd stat; 37 goalies have started 10+ games since Jan 1 2020. Frederik Andersen is 37th amongst those goalies in save % with an .880 save %..
I think our goaler needs to be better. - PatC80
He does, but even vintage Hasek would have been lit up by our garbage PK yesterday. He caused one goal, but had no chance on the others. Maybe I'd have liked to see him stop the deflection goal (#2), just because once again it goes five-hole on him, but really . . . that game is not on Andersen. |

Agreed, one defenseman won't fix all their problems but it will help move people down to more comfortable spots. Holl would go back to the bottom pairing, Dermott could get more sheltered minutes and Marincin would be a healthy scratch |

I'm not putting blame on Andersen for the first 4 Penguins goals last night. That 5th goal was a bad giveaway by him. Since Jan 1, heck since December, he hasn't been very good. |
