Just playing our starter.
Hopefully the leafs actually play D and dont hang him out to dry.
Andersen played great last night.
Team facked him. - Fakepartofme
I’d hope for something more realistic.
Hopefully he can give the D some support.
The D and Freddy both suck right now and Freddy is the one who is playing the furthest from his potential.

my issue is more that the 104 is already quite a bit down (obviously) from the 112-120 'points paces' some babcock haters were highlighting so much the last couple of weeks.
if leafs lose vs pens next game, it's 101 point pace, etc. etc.
keefe's points totals are mainly because of the easy nov/dec schedule in my opinion; leafs are just a .500 team the way dubas has built them. - plantheparade
The Leafs were wafer-thin on defence, and then Muzzin and Reilly got injured.
This team has no hustle or heart, but the injuries are a huge factor. |

So you start your argument by saying Dubas is wasting his time by getting Malgin and not a defenseman. The counter is brought up that Marchment is not exactly currency in any reasonable defenseman trade, and that this is likely an unrelated depth move to provide depth with our injured wingers, and the fact that our bottom-6 have sucked ass of late.
So you counter this statement by noting that Malgin isn't going to fetch defensive help?
You're arguing with your own point and ignoring the context.
There are no happy Leaf fans right now - except Max because whenever they lose 2 or 3 in a row, it lets him go on about how awful Dubas is - but this line of arguing is irrelevant. - Monkeypunk
I love this... really I do.
What context am I ignoring? The GM who's team has two top6 injured defenseman for the past 2-3 weeks - has does nadda to address that issue - but has time to trade a Marlie for another likely AHL player who happens to be a complete mirror image of the guy he acquired last year at about the same point in the season - for a guy who he deemed unable to play in the NHL.
Context Dubas made a useless deal for Lindholm and acquired Petan - who's chances of helping the NHL team are serously limited - unless the same GM moves about 2-3 forwards off the existing roster. Petan will never be an effective 3 or 4 line player on the Leafs. Petan will never be an effective 1 or 2 line player on the Leafs... because he will never get that opportunity again.
now swap Petan with Malgin - rinse repeat. Pontus Aberg - rinse repeat.
Leafs need defensive help more than anything (for context refer to Rielly, Ceci - and the fact that Marincin is back in the line-up).
GM goes and gets a Petan 2.0
makes perfect sense to me. |

He’s been awful. Perfectly fine to be frustrated towards both the D and Freddy. No need to choose one here. - Santo_44

So how many minutes of PK time has Malgin seen during his career if any at all?
I always have a hard time finding out that kind of information.
Some fans on social media are saying he is a good penalty killer but I'm almost positive he has never been a penalty killer. |

I've seen your posts before - I know who you don't like and so on, but this is incredibly myopic for you. Making a Malgin - Marchment swap is as simple as they come. There's a $17k cap variation between the two, and Malgin had requested a trade out of Florida so he wasn't playing a key role there, while Marchment was certainly not playing a key role here. This type of trade is literally something that can take 15 minutes to complete.
Trading for a top-4 defenseman with the cap implications, the trade deadline looming, teams jostling for position to better understand their buy/sell position . . . there are contract considerations for this year, next year, and the Seattle expansion draft - there are so MANY variables in play in determining the acquisition of a top-4 guy.
So, yeah, I CAN actually understand why something like that takes time. |

That because freddys potential is really good while our d's isnt.
The D need to give him support, they never do and never have. Its always him having to stand on his head. Burns a guy out.
He'll have to stand on his head next game for sure. No doubt. No room for bad goals. |

Babcock had been asking for additions on defense for over a year though. not like this was a big surprise this season (oh wait - barrie and ceci were top4 d-men in dubas' book).
the obvious solution is to trade Nylander.
he's a very good player (at least he's got some very good specific skills) which makes him the ideal piece in a trade for a young d-partner for rielly.
Dubas is very risk-averse though - I haven't seen anything from him which was a big move. |

LeBrun says GMs are saying Dubas is very busy.
Has a RHD that management thinks will fit with this group and it’s all about pulling the trigger. Might have to wait until offseason if the cap doesn’t work out. - Santo_44
hopefully Dubas is busy looking for "some stones"... and he wasn't to distracted by acquiring Malgin.... 'cause that deal is going to make a HUUUUUUUUUUGE difference

Freddy needs to give the D support and the D has to give Freddy support. They have both been bad.

so the Petan and Malgin moves don't constitute big moves then? |

Fire Dubas because Petan 2.0 - Steven_Seagull
no no no... I don't want Dubas fired... I want him around to witness the abject stupidity of being just as stubborn as Babcock was...
"we will win with speed and skill"
"we will trade skill for intangibles when we need to"...
stay Dubas, stay... use that hockey analytics organization to drive trades that actually improve the team...
get 'er done! |

Put the JT Hymen Marner combo back together. It was a great scoring line and shut down line. Now they have no real shut down line. This three together was the closest thing to what Boston's top line is. |

You can also go to NaturalStatTrick and then find the player and look at their detailed OnIce stats year over year.
Malgin is small, but fast. It means that he doesn't have the reach to be a great penalty killer, in my book. He's probably someone you'd put out on the third pairing PK if he has the sense for it (of course, what do I know about effective PK; I'm a Leaf fan).
This year, Malgin has played 9 minutes of PK in 36 games. That's 8th amongst Florida's forwards. Last year he had 29 minutes of PK time in 50 games. That was 8th amongst Florida's forwards. He's been decently effective; in those 38 minutes of PK time, he's been on the ice for 2 PP goals against. |

So yes severson is a better choice |
