Its seems bullpoop. Already went thru this. Its against the law for your ISP to give out the name of the account holder unless ordered by a court of law. If a complaint is made against you by a film company You will be notified by your ISP before hand before they release your account to the courts.
That being said. It looks like your wife's friends personal info is being used to extort money out of them., probably hacked. This is just my opinion thou, just so you know...

Are you a Canadian resident or American? And what about the one claiming a lawsuit? If you are Canadian and they are American, it may be a sort of scam where they can't actually do anything but are pressuring you for payment.

Yeah, I've read about this stuff too. Got an email a few years back. In the end, nothing came of it.

Tons of zone entries on that drop pass, but couldn't do anything with it.
