Kerfoot has almost as many 5v5 points as the best two-way center in hockey Kadri, even though he spent most of the season on the 3rd line. Good player.

Trading picks for a rental would be stupid but trading away D when you don’t have replacements available is not going to happen

You're misunderstanding.

Just because they trade Barrie, Dermott and Marincin (for example) doesn't mean they are giving up on the season. It means you are giving up on those particular players who have either failed the team or aren't part of the future plan.

They could just as easily trade those guys and bring in new ones to replace them and give themselves a chance to move forward both this year and the years in the future.
