the sabres have been chasing toughness and glossing over skill since lucic took out miller and have been perennial losers ever since

Having a good offense, wins in every sport.
Making teams always play a way to keep up with your scoring pace makes them press and it often makes other teams one dimensional.

- ImThatGuy

Which way is easier/practical way to win?

Find all the fastest best scorers in the league to come to buffalo?

Or have some scoring and some guys that can plug away and slow the pressing teams down?
Throw them off their game or contain them

Nothing against the push for adding toughness, because i do believe on some level it does even in this day and age have merit. However, more often than not buzzwords like "sandpaper" and "toughness" are just narratives designed to help provide an answer that makes people feel better/rationalize defeat that the true (or truer i guess) answer doesn't.

That truth being that there's a huge element of luck in hockey, probably more so than any of the other major sports in north america. Which makes sense given all the variables in hockey like speed, injury risk, what happens with the puck post shot etc.

Intangibles

The intangible Rob Neidermeyer comes to mind for some reason.

I'll take the 70 point forward over the intangibles. Other people on the team can be more intangible than Reinhart. I'm fine if he's tangible

That's why we need to change the "core" .

i know you are an anti analytics bastion but that is exactly what this current sabres team does. almost better than any other team in the league.

they drain the life out of games, make them as boring as possible with as few scoring chances as possible. but they can't score, and they don't win.

maybe if they brought back hasek this would work better

Solid post

I kinda feel like we need a better mix of toughness in the lineup. We have a few pieces of true value.

Sam
Risto
Montour- kinda

If we are going to trade risto, that's less toughness.

- Boss34

i certainly don't disagree with any of that statement.

suppose it depends on what value you place on which intangibles. I think there's a lot he brings outside his points that is very valuable even if it's not necessarily entertaining or flashy.

Im kinda sad this didn't work out. He's never been a producer but has always had good on ice impacts.

Sample size is a little too small to draw any conclusions but i dont think he's been helped by having his main centre be Johansson who hasn't been a legit 2C in years.

Either transition Dahlin into Foppa 2.0 or trade him for the best 2C you can. He does nothing to move the needle playing defense for this team. Defense doesn't matter in today's NHL. 3ER has been saying it for years folks and it isn't even close. Now the Analytics analyzers are saying it. Are you surprised I'm way out in front? Me neither.

Just read Barnwell said Bills should target Conklin. Just another wise subscriber of the 3ER takes. Like they always used to say, 3ER isn't always right, but aint ever been wrong.

Most guys get hurt putting forth effort.
Blocking shots, skating fast crashing into the boards, checking and even fighting . Kinda doesnt apply here.

* it's a good quality to be there for your team every game, regardless of nagging injuries ect. Props for dressing in consecutive games

You do realize the Sabres have a presing D-style that shuts down other teams.

They just dont score.

They are a very sound Defensive team.

Having Larsson/Girgs/Frolik/Okposo on your bottom is good (Not salary good, but good)

The top of the lineup is putrid, and has been for years.

The best teams in the League in scoring per game
1) COL
2)Tampa
3) Washington
4)Toronto
5) Florida
5)Boston
6) Pitts

Some of the leagues best teams.

So you want to trade a 19 year old franchise Defenseman who will likely have 50 points
