messier spent his entire career in Edmonton throwing his elbow into peoples heads because he knew that if anyone tried to fight him, Mcsorley and/or semenko would end their lives.

goons protected their stars from being hit, but they also allowed them to be cheap and dirty players also

- sensarmy_11

Messier could fight but players avoided him. Speaking of McSorely, Messier once cracked his helmet with a punch. True story.

You suck at being a troll blogger. It's not my fault you hate yourself. Your insecurity is pathetic. Plus you're a Hypocrite. You can dish it out but can't take it. Opinion isn't fact. You're too ignorant to understand this. You're a mental midget. I live fairly close to you. I'm more than willing to discuss this in person.

Oh my god!!! The classic lets meet up and have a fight! I'm sorry but you're a loser. Whenever it escalates into I'm a tough guy I just have to laugh - fn pathetic.

Scott Stevens and Chris Pronger couldn't play today. They'd be suspended all the time. Back in the day the hip check was considered to be a skill. Now it's deemed first degree murder. Of course hockey was dirty in the 50s,60s,70s,80s... the point being lost here is that the dirt bag crap is still here. Fighting has been replaced by other means of retribution. Drilling players into the glass from behind. Targeting the head. Slashing on the back of the legs and wrists.

This has always gone on but today the players doing it are not held accountable for it. There's zero fear. The rats rule the league. I always believed Scott Stevens were hard legal hits with the shoulder. Many thought he was dirty. He smoked Kozlov in the 1995 SCF and Wings fans cried about it. Kozlov had his head down and Stevens caught him. It was a clean check IMO.

Lindros never learned to keep his head up because he never had to. He was biggest and stronger than his opponents. But he paid the price for it in the NHL. Derian Hatcher is another player who couldn't play today. He was basically an assassin on ice. Feared. Dirty. But when guys like Hatcher, Pronger and Stevens hit an opponent, they had to answer for it and fight. Today players don't have to fight. There's no accountability.

yes, there are definitely still rats in the game, but a majority of what they do is just douchebaggery, it rarely gets to the level of "potentially career ending" dirty play. that kind of dirty play was common place back then.

when players today throw hits like the ones you mentioned above, they still have to fight.........that kind of fighting never left the game. the fighting you don't see nearly as much is that staged garbage.

the reason the game is less dirty and violent today, IMO, has nothing to do with fighting...........I think when they did away with obstruction, it made the league lean much more heavily on skilled players. there are way more smaller fast guys, and way less big dumb Neanderthals.

I think there are way more douchebags in the league today, but I don't think what they do is "dirty" in the sense of dangerous hits....I think it's dirty in the sense of slashing a guy in the nuts in a scrum, biting his finger when he face washes you..........to me that's just being a douche, it's not "dirty play".

messier was an animal.

I still think the biggest Neanderthal on that team was semenko though.

I used to work with his younger brother, who was an Infantry Sergeant Major.......the guy was maybe the most terrifying man I've ever met face to face.

Okay then, let's discuss your point. Re-emphasize it for me if I'm wrong about it.

Jesus, kid.
Which crosscheck was worse, Marchands on an unsuspecting Lindgren, or Buchnevich's
On an unsuspecting Marchand?
Both were from players who were retaliating previous crosschecks against teammates.
Answer: They both sucked, but Bruins fans will defend 63, while Ranger fans will defend 89.
No one here gives two shìts about what the Flyers fans think about it, or the fact that you lied about holding some kind of higher moral ground than other fans.
Go back to harassing Tanner, bud.
You're out of your league trying to pull that crap on me or sensarmy or anyone else for that matter.

Bobby Clarke had the Broad Street Bullies protecting him. Made him much more courageous.

Bobby Schmaultz cut so many people with his stick they nicknamed him “The Surgeon”
My point is that I think the game used to be much dirtier before the instigator rule

Glen Anderson was another stick artist. I disagree. It's Frontier justice vs No justice. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

100%

the movie slapshot, while clearly an exaggeration, was an honest depiction of what hockey was like in the 70's.......a few skilled guys, who were surrounded by 2 or 3 lines of cavemen who liked to hit eachother with clubs.

LMAO. That's exactly what I said your point was.

You're description of my statements is not accurate.

I find it hysterical when rather than discuss the actual merits, you need to resort to being the spokesman for the group and propping yourself up that you're better. If you actually were, you wouldn't need to state it!

When you want to get back to the hockey content, let me know.

No argument about Semenko. I met him. Super nice guy and very funny! But he was intimidating. He really did look like a cave man! 😲

True. Even stick swinging duels were fairly common.
