I'm sorry, but why in the F*** would the Hawks NOT use the cap space they have right now when they're in the playoff mix NOT to use that cap space to improve this team NOW??? especially when the the cap space goes away in the summer?? oh and you can get players at pro-rated deals???
Tank?.... Shoot for a lottery pick?
Give me a break, if Bowman doesn't use this cap space then he should be fired - and I have been the biggest Bowman advocate over the last 10 years - but the man has lost his mind if he doesn't use this cap space....
Out of any bubble team the Blackhawks have the best opportunity to improve the team.... If Bowman can make the right acquisitions The Hawks could contend.... And on the flip-side of the coin I want to see these kids get experience and excel, however the Blackhawks have an opportunity to really stock up with talent and they have the ability to become a real force down the stretch, if they can add a couple of forwards and a couple of defensemen - and they have the space.....
It appears tho that some (not all) Hawks fans want to sell off assets to continue the rebuild another 2-3 years....... NO, NO, NO...... This isn't going to be 1997 all over again.
Look, my point it that the Hawks are in a fantastic position to really put themselves in a position to make a "power move", change the team, add assets and finish the season strong. - Savard2Secord
If bowman uses the cap space (this isn’t free money we would be over the cap legally) all of the bonus money earned by players this year get pushed into next years cap. There won’t be anything done unless a big contract like say saad or Maata is moved for a bad 1 year deal or something like gus front a player or picks.
The relief money would only be worth using if they had a legit cup shot like in 2013 |

You know they won't actually tank but I agree with the rest of it. As much as I enjoyed them playing somewhat meaningful hockey, the recent losing streak should have them selling at the deadline...hopefully.
I don't think it will be a fire sale but I'd like to see if Stan can take advantage of any desperate trade partners at the deadline. - HawkintheD
This is another side effect of growing parity - there are a lot more mediocre teams in the middle which means less desperate buyers as there used to be.

Which UFAs should they take on (that other teams are willing to trade) would take this team from below average to the Playoffs? Take a look on Capfriendly. There are not a lot of options. The guys that teams are willing to get rid of are not going to do it for you. I only see one guy, Taylor Hall, that would be a notable improvement over what we have and something that the other team would be willing to give up (if the rumors are to be trusted).
Not to mention, what do you have to give up to get said players? - Chunk
Straight up UFA (via buyout): Byfuglien (???..... $2.5, PRO-RATED)
UFA: Kovalchuk (700k)
UFA: Joe Thornton ($1,000,000)

I do too - via the tank, better draft picks, and three more years of that. Then when some cap comes off the books they will have FA money to spend again. And hopefully learn lessons on how not to sign players going forward. - Return of the Roar
The bolded, I could not agree with you more.
The tank, I have a major problem with. It just doesn't do much to improve your chances. The worst record in the league has less than a 20% chance of getting the first overall. Not to mention outside of the GM intentionally dumping all of the good players on a team, you are not going to get the players to buy into intentionally losing - nor a coach for that matter. |

I would put all three of these guys in the least likely to learn, adapt, and buy into a new system.
And that doesn't take into account that Buff aint gonna play this season.

This team will not tank. They will find a way to win enough to stay at the .500 mark or just above it. Either way, it is simply time to bust out the big moving box and make some serious changes. |

This again? Are you serious or joking?
If serious:
1) Please let this sink in. Byfuglien has yet to put a pair of skates on, nor has he even some close to saying that he ever wants to play again.
2) What are you giving up to get the other two, and how/why would they help the Hawks. Thornton is garbage right now. Kovalchuk is decent now getting prime minutes, but has been worthless for much longer. |

It’s a blog. You and others ridiculed John and i liked John but he also had some points that were valid and some others that the narrative was overplayed. If you or Paul read that link, he’s not entirely off in his line of thinking. Nor is he entirely speaking from a non biased point of view.
Nobody here has a direct line to anyone in the organization. or else they’d be spending their time best suited to help the club. The game of telephone or sources or what have you is overplayed. I don’t see anyone challenging Tyler on his sources like they did John? How does anyone here know Tyler’s said sources are 100% factual or not another circus with the intent to embarrass somebody like some did in years past with John? That’s where this board is heavily divided and these posts go no where.
It’s not necessarily saying your right and he’s wrong. It’s a difference of opinion. He believes in his and you believe in yours.
The elitist attitude that comes off at times is exactly what a radio host in Chicago portrays and his ratings decline every year because of it. What makes you or elbows or Paul or me any more more educated then pe or 6628 or whoever else?
That’s what is driving people off this board. If it doesn’t fit a certain narrative people are shamed and the clique cackles along.
Calling a very good goalie lard ass just because or hoping a guy gets injured is the most immature thing on here. Apparently the said Gm you and others defend to the death like both and have liked smith for awhile according to the hawks themselves.
But he, Smith, sucks.
Same old song and dance each and every blog in the comments section. Nothing new. - SteveRain
First JJ lost any credibility he may have had when a bunch of us fed him bullpoop rumours and he posted them to this blog as fast as he could all to generate hits never investigating the rumours or my claim that I knew “Bob”. What was funny as hell was that his other “sources” were verifying the bullpoop we fed him. JJ is full of poop, we know it, you know it and JJ knows it.
I have no idea if Tyler’s sources are accurate but he doesn’t tell us over and over his sources give him trade info either. Tyler is actually anvery talented blogger who has the ability to write a different blog to generate real discussion with our resorting to fairy tale trades.
Power enforcer is harmless but his ridiculous, easily to dispute tin foil hat conspiracy theories, are there to be ridiculed.
6628 is knowledgeable and I like what he brings to the blog. No I don’t agree with everything he posts but I’m sure he doesn’t agree with all I post either.
Now we come to Steve Rain, the guy who posted absolutely nothing positive in 2010, 2013 and 2015. Your biggest problem while the hawks were busy winning cups on their way to being the best team of the decade was whine about McD’s marketing, about how the media portrayed the team and how much you detested Patrick Sharp even going as far as making unsubstantiated claims he messed around with certain women and was hated by certain teammates. You obviously know hockey but it’s hard to make a connection with a Hawk fan who got more satisfaction from criticizing three championship teams then showing he was happy they were so successful.
For the record none of D, Elbows, Mohel and myself fully agree on everything. I like Lehner, I don’t mind Smith and I am alone in believing the core should have been traded three years ago and a rebuild started. |

I meant, the kind of player SB trades for (recently) are players in their 20s with term in their contract, meaning contracts that are 2-4 yrs long. Not UFAs

They aren’t adding to the team. They are flawed and have been flawed since game 1 with only a great goalie tandem to mask the issues for spurts. And when said goalies aren’t playing at an elite level they are screwed.
Prepare yourself for the 2/24 deadline. If they aren’t selling as many pieces as they can then that’s a major red flag to me. - SteveRain
I usually agree with most of your thoughts, Steve Rain.
Being in a position to add due to salary cap room is so over played. Even if we acquire some good players, this team does not want not has ever shown a high compete level but merely in spurts. Any board game and overall grit is only a brief glimpse
I realize Shaw is out. I admit there could be an additional physicality derived through trades. But not enough toughness would exist even after those moves. And I really question if Toews willingly plays hard physical brand each game through the end of the season
Watching other games and seeing the level of complete, the body pounding from checking and skirmishes.....that is playoff hockey and it is not in the blood of enough current Blackhawks.
Unfortunately I do not foresee a high return rate through trading. We do not want or will likely use mid level prospects in the years ahead. Take the draft choices or try a two for one type trade - we give a team for example two useable playoff depth pieces like Gus and Smith for ?
Stan would be smart to give Lehner a promise of a slight overpay but Lehner is not stupid. He can get that offer in the off season but maybe not much better. Many teams are not hurting in net. Quick and or others may be shipped as well.
The cost to draft NOW in a rebuild on fly or to trade for a very good goaltender is prohibitive. Even the time to develop a top rated goaltender is just too much. I do not know a drafted netminders- develoos to NHL stardom after three years pro - how long is this incremental rebuild in the fly.
I do not see anything which spells out that Delia or Laakinen could become top NHL goaltenders. They become descent NHL netminders- perhaps.
So offer Lehner an overpay - gamble. Just not too long in terms of years. Offer five years at how much? Not sure, maybe $7.25 Mill per year? Offer that both now and later if he is traded then hits the open market |
