Time to walk away from Marky. No goalie is worth what he will get paid. It’s been a good ride - CanuckDon
Im a huge Marky guy but the term is gonna be so tough to get around I agree now. Hes gonna get 5 or 6 x 6.5 to 7. Im not a huge Demko guy but itll be him and a decent second tier guy next year
Why would we need to play without a goalie? We have demko and whoever we sign in the summer. We don’t have cap space to keep Marky - CanuckDon
wow you totally missed the point on that one Donny. If no goalie was worth what he was getting paid - there would be no goalies - hence playing with empty nets.
And that statement is just flat out wrong. There's plenty of goalies making what they're worth, also some underpaid, some WAY overpaid.
To be clear, I don't know what to do with Marky - but if I was his agent I'd be looking for 4yrX6$ minimum. Obviously the danger is signing a guy 30yr+ to a contract that takes them into their 35+yrs. OR taking a gamble on Demko and DiPietro.
There's been guys that have signed comparable contracts recently - Jones 30yr, 5.7X6, Bishop was 30yr 4.9X6, Dubnyk 30yr - 4.3X6, Rinne 29yr 7X7, Fluery 35yr 7X3. I wouldn't say they're all mistakes.
I don't think you can just walk away from the guy either - it's gonna have to be a tough negotiation. Marky's a weird guy in that he's really come into his prime in the last 2 years so what if he does keep it up for another 4-5 years?
Stecher: “I don’t think I’ll ever get over that fact (that I played with the Sedins).
“I’m sure at the end of my career I’ll pinch myself that I played with Petey and Quinn.
“They (Sedins) were legends and there are legends in this room being made too”

Also, what would that say to the room? Especially if Demko stumbles... “Sorry, we walked away from your legit number one goalie who we road last year, and now the team is turning the corner we’re going with an unknown starter.”

I agree and think it will be somewhere in that range also. - Makita
He has to be in the Vezina running, especially if we win the division. What if he wins it?.
The last 5 winners are...
Andrei Vasilevskiy- $9.5
Pekka Rinne- $5.0
Sergei Bobrovsky- $10.0
Braden Holtby- $6.1 Won Stanley Cup
Carey Price- $10.5
Only one was FA signing (Sergei Bobrovsky). So the rest were signed by their own team.
Holtby is 30 and signed in 2015 so his contract would be considered low now.
Rinne was making $7 mil, but took a pay cut and shares duties now. Plus he is 37. Signed a 2 year deal last year.
So Markstrom may like it here, but this is his time to get the big payday.
The Canucks have,
Goalie depth,
A younger backup that is pushing for a starters role,
Seattle expansion draft concerns,
Salary cap concerns ( I know Vantel...),
Team depth concerns,
Ghosts of Schneider / Luongo deal.
My guess is he will start 4 years x 7.0 mil, and with comparisons, he is not off, IMO.
Will he settle for 4 years at 5.5 to 6 mil?. Do we want that with the issues it would create?
Anybody thinking in the 4 to 5 mill range is dreaming, once again IMO.

I think Marky wants to be around for that so he may sacrifice a year and a bit of money for that (reasonable to think that the Nux 5 year window is now open) but you have to believe he thinks he has at least 5 more good years in him. Whether or not that happens is for the crystal ballers.

And my point flew over your head. We can’t fit Marky under the cap. Minimum 5 years and $6MM per. Goodbye Marky 👋🏼

So when do you trade him??? - carsonagenic
if anyone truly believes you can trade your #1 two weeks before the TDL, in a playoff race, while currently in 1st place - they need to delete their account/life and start watching darts
