Especially with Hyman walking into UFA that year. I could see him commanding 5 million on the open market. We don't need two players commanding that money. Add in Andersen to that.
- Santo_44

I'm hoping Hyman realizes he fits on this team and takes a deal similar to how Kunitz always took reasonable deals to play on Crosbys wing.

2.5 million dollars guaranteed next 2 seasons.

I'd take it.

- TheMussel

engvall's side should have only taken 1.25 for 1 season because clearly he is going to be well underpaid in the 2nd year.

Trade two of Johnsson/Kapanen/Kerfoot. One for a defenceman, and one for a good pick(s).

The one year could easily have been less money. Like a million or maybe Engvall likes Toronto, wants to win here in the window and wanted a bit of security.

And replace them with what? A Marlie? Is a league minimum player going to bring in 40-50 points a season?

Next year:

Mathews 11.634
Tavares 11
Marner 10.893
Nylander 6.962
Kerfoot 3.5
Johnsson 3.4
Kapanen 3.2
Hymen 2.25
Engvall 1.25
Sandin .894
Liljegren .863
Marincin .700
Holl 2
Campbell 1.65
Andersen 5
Reilly 5
Kesel 1.2

Total 71.496/83(proj).
Remaining:11.594

UFA
Clifford
Spezza
Muzzin
Barrie
Ceci

RFA
Aberg
Timashov
Goat
Dermott
Mikhey

Hymen Matthews Marner
Johnsson Tavares Nylaner
? Kerfoot Kap
? ? Engvall
?

Reilly ?
Dermott Holl
Sandin Lil
Marincin

Leafs will have 11.594 to fill 4 forward spots and 1 d spot.

The real question is not whether they will fill out the roster, the question is how do they get better?

Hymen will need a re-up after next year and he’s looking like a 4+ million dollar player. Plus it’s interesting to see what he RFAs get this year to say nothing of the UFAs. Plus here’s another problem. Sure you can trade Johnsson or Kap for picks and get the cap space, but to replace them at their current playing ability will take at least the same amount of money anyway unless one of the Marlies is going to step in and get 40 points.

Need to make a big time trade.

- aminnes

don't think Dubas has to make "one big deal"... he may be better off with 1-2 or 3 smaller deals.

tacticaly exchange contracts - foward for defense if the opportunity emerges...

I think he needs to find out if Muzzin will sign and for how much... Once that is determined... then he would know if he can potentially deal Dermott.

right now 2 out of 3 of Johnsson, Kerfoot and Kapanen COULD be moved... if Muzzin agrees to a deal - then Dermott potentially becomes a trade chip. Hopefully Barrie as well.

Columbus would appear to need scoring. Islanders appear to need scoring. Buffalo needs anything/everything. Anaheim would seem to need to get younger - and get some guys who can score. Calgary has openly indicated that are looking for scoring. The list goes on.

Minnesota is essentially a seller. Montreal should be. Ottawa is. Detroit definitely is.

There has to be a match some where...

but you have to give to get.

Surgery can be used to accelerate recovery from bad high ankle sprains.

Trading away a bunch of middling forwards to keep a middling d man and then trading away another mid range d man doesn't make the team better. Who's replacing the traded forwards? How is he team better?

I was in the garden earlier when my wife shouted down from the bedroom window.

"Fancy coming up here and sucking my tits?" she said.

"I can't be bothered coming upstairs," I replied. "Just take your bra off and I'll do it from down here!"

So they are going to bag 20 goals? And then they're former positions are replaced with bums as well I guess?

Top 6 guys being replaced with 3rd or 4th line quality doesn't make the team better.

well... maybe you combine two young middling players on reasonable contracts for one more premium player...

that's the choice/dilemna

Oh ya. He will need to be very creative. Massive challenge to improve this team going into next year.
