I look at Hyman and how good that 3 x 2.25 looks now. If you liked what you see and he's healthy then I got no problem giving him the Hyman/Brown type contracts.

If it weren't for the injury and he had continued putting up points he might have been looking at Kappy/Johnsson $$.

- The Law

exactly.

better to sign him for 3 years at a slight now descreased annual amount due to the injury and the shortenened audition this year.

walking away or walking him into FreeAgency via a 1yr deal would be a little dumb..

give him 3x2 - 3x2.5 or thereabouts

Especially with Hyman walking into UFA that year. I could see him commanding 5 million on the open market. We don't need two players commanding that money. Add in Andersen to that.

i just don't see engvall as a 20 goal scorer....i'm not sold on him replacing either of those guys.

i like his game on the 3rd line though

edit: NM. I see you're talking about mik.

- Steven_Stamkos

I see your edit - I just want to add that I love Engvall's game. I don't think he's really a 20 goal guy either - although with injuries, if given the opportunity, I think he has the capability.

Honestly, I just love the way he handles the puck. The intelligence to pass it back and keep control on the PK. The intelligence to find open ice and move to it and then find ways to move and keep the puck. I am also in awe of where his centre of gravity must be given the length of his neck.

I still think Dermott has potential to be decent. It really depends on the trade market and the Muzzin contract talks and his expectations.

I think he needs a year playing these minutes to develop. As we discussed before, I'm still firmly in the - this is a guy who only has 144 NHL games to his credit, which isn't really 2 seasons, and much of that was sheltered.

I believe he can more than he's been. I don't think he's a 1-2 guy, but I believe he can be a 3-4 guy, so if you can get him at 3x2.5, it's a worthwhile contract - because it can still be dealt.

I'm not adverse to including him in a deal for a better right-side D-man either. I'm also not adverse to trying him on the right side if his contract is suitable.

If Dubas figures Muzzin wants too much I am all for keeping Dermott...I'd expect Dubas to already have a pretty good idea whether or not they will be able to sign Muzzin so I think we will learn pretty quickly what their plan with Dermott is.

I love Hyman but he is a candidate to get way overpaid. They can have him then

He showed top 6 potential and then had his arm severed by a 32-foot great white shark.

He shows us he can still play before we show him the money.

- Atomic Wedgie

Pretty much.
Either way, no need to worry about it for many months.

Joe Thornton has 5 power play points in 103:00 minutes of powerplay time this year.

Jason Spezza has 7 powerplay points in 50:35 minutes of powerplay time this year.

- Atomic Wedgie

I have a hard time believing Spezza has seen that much Powerplay ice?

Next year:

Mathews 11.634
Tavares 11
Marner 10.893
Nylander 6.962
Kerfoot 3.5
Johnsson 3.4
Kapanen 3.2
Hymen 2.25
Engvall 1.25
Sandin .894
Liljegren .863
Marincin .700
Holl 2
Campbell 1.65
Andersen 5
Reilly 5
Kesel 1.2

Total 71.496/83(proj).
Remaining:11.594

UFA
Clifford
Spezza
Muzzin
Barrie
Ceci

RFA
Aberg
Timashov
Goat
Dermott
Mikhey

Hymen Matthews Marner
Johnsson Tavares Nylaner
? Kerfoot Kap
? ? Engvall
?

Reilly ?
Dermott Holl
Sandin Lil
Marincin

Leafs will have 11.594 to fill 4 forward spots and 1 d spot.

The real question is not whether they will fill out the roster, the question is how do they get better?

Hymen will need a re-up after next year and he’s looking like a 4+ million dollar player. Plus it’s interesting to see what he RFAs get this year to say nothing of the UFAs. Plus here’s another problem. Sure you can trade Johnsson or Kap for picks and get the cap space, but to replace them at their current playing ability will take at least the same amount of money anyway unless one of the Marlies is going to step in and get 40 points.

Need to make a big time trade.

The season is 56 games in! The Leafs have 262 PP minutes (we're 29th). Spezza is 8th among forwards in ice time (Kerfoot, Kapanen and Johnsson have more ice time than Spezza on the PP as well as JT, MM, Matthews & Nylander).

I remember reading that if Weber retires early the Pred's are screwed because of his retirement cap hit..

Yeah, but if Hyman leaves Toronto, he is losing those sweet gigs doing radio spots for personal injury lawyers.

That’s gotta be what, $30,000?

The cap recapture penalty in a couple years is something like 24 million dollars that they have to eat in a single season

I went up to a girl in the club last night and said, "That's a nice dress. Do you know what it'd look even better on?"

"Let me guess," she sighed. "Your bedroom floor?"

"No," I replied. "A better looking girl!"
