Top 6 guys being replaced with 3rd or 4th line quality doesn't make the team better. - aminnes
Johnsson and Kapanen were top6 guys in 18-19... they are not now - except for in injury fill in situations... which is why their stats are suffering.
Leafs wouldn't be trading a 2nd line, or a 2nd line Leaf winger.
that's the advantage Dubas has "at this moment"... by next year the contracts for those guys will not look as good... because they are playing a 3rd line role "largely".
that's exactly why there is urgency for Dubas to maximize those resources at this point in time |

Everyone needs to be a fantastic 2 way player that puts up 20 goals and also makes league minimum. |

The big question is who is replacing them at their current cap hits or lower that would be superior? Call me crazy but I just don't see it. And if a team takes them what are the Leafs getting back because as you said, they are not even playing like top 6 guys right now. |

I know you are joking - they aren't in CAP hell... but they would seem to need to allocate some of their current "forward allocated CAP" to defense allocated CAP...
hopefully they can Muzzin on a 3x5 year deal and get Mikheyev to take a deal along the lines of Engvall's .
I would love to see another year of Spezza ... and there a plenty of guys to fill in those bottom 4-5 positions.
but Dubas will have to give one of the guys or two that we have discussed...
to get a defenseman of some note.

I like the Engval signing. He's looked pretty good so far and it's pretty cheap. Not much risk if he regresses and it could be a great deal if he improves. |

Looking at what's available for FA d and how desperate teams are, I think Muzz is bare minimum getting 6 million. He is likely the 3rd best d behind Pete, and Krug. |

Two of Johnsson/Kerfoot/Kapanen are gone, and Dermott will likely go too. |

Trading away a bunch of middling forwards to keep a middling d man and then trading away another mid range d man doesn't make the team better. Who's replacing the traded forwards? How is he team better? - aminnes
I think it depends how much improvement you think they need to make.
I think Engvall and Mikheyev jump into the top 9 (they already have) and that pushes one of the other young wingers expendable (probably kapanen). The fourth line will be a mix of Goats and Spezza's again making 700k. So no real change up front.
The tenders will stay the same.
The blue line is where we all want improvements. They need 2 guys in the top 4. Maybe Muzzin is 1. if so it sounds like he's looking at about 5 Milly.
If that happens you've got Kappy and Dermott to dangle in trades and about 6-7 Milly in cap space to add that partner for Rielly. |

Don't forget Barrie!
In truth I think Muzzin is far more important for us to keep. Hopefully Dubas can get him for 5-5.5. Even less would be better but I'm trying to be realistic lol. Hopefully he likes it here enough to sign for a little less. |

It does seem like things are changing a bit. It's a young man's league and younger players are getting larger shares of the pie.
It seems like the older players are going to have to take less, and I think GM's (we'll see I guess) are finally wising up a bit and going to offer less term. |

uh yeah, he severed tendons and an artery in his wrist, there is no guarantee he comes back the player he was before the injury. if he can't pass or shoot like he used to, he's pretty much done. |

Haven't seen too many d'men over 30 signing for big dollars/long term.
Comps are guys like Stralman (3 x 5.5) but he was a summer signing. If Muzzin stays it's b/c he signs this month at good value. If he doesn't then fine he's probably heading to market. |

For all we know, Robertson could make the NHL next year. 850k cap hit.
Robertson is about the same size and will be the same age (19) as DeBrincat.
Robertson-Tavares-Nylander as a second line?
Engvall-Kerfoot-Mikheyev as a third line?
But of course, cap hell. So... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |
