Good read!
It even mentions the Leafs once or twice Roger! - obie
By now, we can assume Marc Bergevin has got the message that Kovalchuk himself appeared to hurl to the rafters after that overtime goal:
Sign the man.
as much as a 2nd round pick could be interesting, things are going too well right now for Kovy to not consider signing him.

If he's willing to sign a 1 or max 2 years contract at a cap hit of around 3.5M. I'm all for keeping him.

For this one night, Price, a guy who has won the Molson Cup for 4,617 successive months and is worshipped this side of idolatry by the Montreal mob, was no longer the favourite. The fans wanted Kovalchuk to win that first star and they wanted him bad.

So if he refuses 1 year but would take 2 you trade him for a 3rd rounder?
That would suck.
I'm not saying it's ideal to give him two years but it might be what it takes.

Yes I would...see Kings, LA. One year...keep him motivated or don't keep him
EDIT: he's also 35 plus

they're surely not getting a 1st rounder back, but with his recent performances, would it be far fetched to expect a 2nd?

I feel like, despite his recent success, teams will be hesitant to give a 2nd rounder away since he might go back to his LA Kings self.
A feel like a 3rd is the best we'll get for him. And I'd rather keep him if that's the case.
