COLUMBUS, Ohio — Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones is facing surgery after suffering a fractured and sprained right ankle in a 2-1 loss to Colorado on Saturday.

General manager Jarmo Kekalainen said Jones will have further testing before his surgery is scheduled.

“He’s out for a while,” Kekalainen told The Athletic on Monday.

Nothing to do with this post but if I'm pelech I'm going to get paid big time when his contract is up in a couple of years By far our best D-Man

No doubt he'll be due for a big raise. I'm not totally sure he'll be making star-money, even if he is one, because it's kind of hard to quantify some of what he brings. But he's definitely going to get a big bump in pay if he stays healthy.

Not star money but he'll get 5 plus a year easily especially since he is making peanuts now

Pelech not being a big offensive dman makes it interesting. He should still do well.

Yeah I think so. Maybe something in the $5M-$6M range.

Not getting my hopes up, but I am very curious what they could actually afford to do at the deadline. I think the prices on guys like Pageau and Toffoli are going to be sky-high with all the buyers out there and a pretty severe lack of talent.
- eichiefs9

I hear this constantly and am for the most part usually shocked and underwhelmed(for reasons unknown at this point)at how little these players go for that trade value is supposedly sky high. Believe it when I see it. Last I checked Toffoli’s supposed rate was a 2nd and a middling prospect not sure that qualifies as sky high? Sure that value can rise for reasons you mentioned but it’s far from a definite.

I don't totally disagree with you, a lot of times there's a lot of talk out there about guy's prices going through the roof and the actual cost isn't so bad. "2nd and a prospect" is kind of a broad description though. A 2nd and Parker Wotherspoon is a home run. A 2nd and Oliver Wahlstrom is a disaster.

I know you're not insinuating that either one of those two are likely and the reality probably lies somewhere in the middle. But you never know what happens, it's entirely a possible a desperate team that might see their window closing may go all-in and offer up a 1st+prospect. The market shrinks even further if the Rangers decide to shift their priorities to re-signing Kreider instead of moving him.

I really believe the focus should be on guys with term or expiring RFA deals and not rentals. The Islanders are going to need some flexibility moving forward because the Ladd/Boychuk deals aren't going anywhere any time soon.

I stated middling prospect I don’t believe Wahlstrom fits that description yet even with his mediocre play. I think whatever I read was B or C level prospect. Who knows he could go for a first if multiple teams get involved but I feel like just about every TDL I’m left wondering why the (frank) we weren’t involved when I see what the majority of these players are going for which imo most of the time doesn’t amount to much. I think Stone probably went for more than anyone I can remember in a long time and he was a sign and trade.

Problem is that the Isles don't have a ton of "middling" prospects. They have a lot of high-risk, high-reward kids that are probably worth infinitely more to the Isles than they are to another team who would be inheriting the risk of them not panning out.

I don't really think they can afford to part with Wahlstrom for a rental. I'm not opposed to moving anyone else that falls into the "prospect" category, but I don't think anyone else really has much value.

Wilde may be a stud of an offensive defenseman, but he's going to take quite a bit of developing.

Iskhakov has a ton of skill and is having a nice season at UCONN but he's tiny and he's going to be a top-six-or-nothing kind of guy.

Holmstrom is really young and adjusting to the pro game, which is totally fine, but hasn't done much of anything and has continued to see some of the injuries that were red flags to a lot of teams during the draft.

Would you do a 2nd and Koivula? I can see arguments on both sides for that one.

I would love to see the Isles go after Kase/Labanc/Blake Coleman (who's got one more year under contract at a measly $1.8M)/Josh Anderson (who I think would be an amazing fit but his injury history scares me)/Palmieir/etc... Those are guys I'd pay more for instead of throwing a bunch of assets at a rental that may or may not be worth it for a few months.

He’s a steal at that number. Hopefully he comes back the same player. Pulock is also going to get paid on his next deal. I was happy we signed Lee and I believe it was necessary but his contract definitely hurts us a bit especially with his play this season imo.

I'm not expecting big name trades but it's a horrible look if Lou lets another deadline go without making a move. It's been many years of Isles frustration at the deadline. Hate to see it continue this year.

Love to have Palmeri on this team. Think he would be a good fit and he’s a local guy so he may be on board with it. He’s worth a first plus imo. Anyone we draft in the most likely 20-26 range we would be hoping they develop into a Palmeri like player. That to me makes me feel better about giving up a first especially since we get another year of him at a decent contract. I can see the Devils dealing with us we don’t have the same rivalry with them even though it’s intradivision or I should say it’s at least more likely than a trade with the Rangers whatever that amounts too.
