Although I’d never seen Quinn Hughes play before he was drafted I wasn’t enamoured with his small frame, even though I’ve been harping about the Canucks needing to draft more pure talent, because you simply can’t win without straight up skill.
I’m so glad Benning and Brackett identified him ahead of the other bigger defensemen, he’s so talented, so so talented.
Dahlin is also super talented, he had 40+ points as an 18 year old dman, that pretty damn good!! - Pacificgem
I was honestly scared sh tless when JB drafted Hughes. I thought he was too small and I wasnt overly impressed by him at the WJC the December before.
BOY WAS I WRONG!!!
I know these are lofty expectations, but, give EP and QH 2 more years of growth and I can see the Canucks winning the Cup.
They are young, skilled, lots of depth now with some excellent pieces still coming (Podkolzin, Lind, Hoglander, even OJ)
This core is too strong not to be in the conversation by the end of next year.
I'm confident that JB will work out the tight cap without subtracting from the group.
I havent been this excited in almost 10 years now, during the height of the Sedin era.

I wonder if JB would still be the GM if we won a lottery spot in Petey's year and still taken him. - NorthNuck
People would have crapped at the time. I think he wanted Makar in that draft. I can only imagine how things would be right now if we had picked Hischier or Patrick. As I already mentioned, losing the draft lottery taught me that it isn't always a bad thing to fall in the draft. Every year there's missed talent because the consensus dials in on a couple of players. |

Not sure if this was discussed in here but I was just watching Bieksa on Tim&Sid from a couple days ago and he dropped a little nugget about Petey.
He said he had heard from someone within the team that in their psychological testing prior to the draft they thought he might have some issues with authority/minor attitude problem. Said that's been mostly dispelled now since he's been playing in Van but that might explain all the "death stare" stuff. |

Enjoyed the battle of Alberta game, McDavid and Draisaitl are such phenomenal talents, the rest of the team is pretty average. Calgary plays hard and with emotion going to be a good race to the division lead.
I like how the Canucks can turn it on when needed, but why are all of the games slow to start and by end of the first and 5 mins into the second they seem to wake up.
Markstrom was fantastic last night, Garrett nailed it with the Gump Worsely comparison on that pad save. - Makita

Didn't see this before I posted. Vantel also gave me the "We're used to it," treatment last night. |

I was really happy they took Hughes . I heard all along he would go top 3 and his skills were next level. I also felt the same when PodK was still available at 10.

It takes some of us (me) slower people longer to come around. I also have to admit, having played in an era where big D-men were the rule, I had some old school bias to get over.

Count me in the boat that was amped with that pick. Knew Hughes would be a huge impact, especially with how the league is trending. Didn’t think he would be this impactful this soon, but the kid is/was special.
Pod is going to be another one where people are admitting their mistake. He was a top 3 talent that fell, and is flying under the radar because of where he’s playing. |

I think Benning is covering all the bases with picks , trades and free agents. As much as I like Pearson and Leivo it will be good to see some of these prospects coming in.
I still think we need a second line center though. |

I see the day 2 day highlights from Daniel Gee and Cam Robinson. This kid is going to be good. He is reminding me more and more of Hertl . |

I used to jokingly refer to him as the next Bobby Orr, I think it was Vantel that gave me the gears over that one.
I sat right behind the goal at WJC, Hughes is the smoothest skater I‘ve seen, almost effortless. |

In the grander scheme of things you are probably right. There has to be a succession to bump Horvat. But I'm OK with him there as things sit with the line-up now. He's still pretty young and an ace in the faceoff circle that can put up decent points. Those guys don't grow on trees and are pretty costly to acquire. |
