It might be generic, because the role likely differ from organization to organization, else every team in every league would have a standard organizational structure, including President of (insert sport here) Operations.
In the case of the Sabres organization that is stumbling and fumbling at the top, and a young inexperienced NHL GM, and nothing in between; hopefully that President would be a very, very experienced Hockey Ops guy who would leverage that experience and have the latitude to define the specific responsibilities.
In general, as I understand it, the Position Summary would be to serve as a sounding board, a voice of sober second thought, an experienced hockey mind that understands the current climate of the NHL. That is the key, using PROVEN experience and having a solid track record DEMONSTRATING consistent good judgement, he would set the Strategy, the Direction of the organization, the structure of the organization, the investments needed. He would be front of the media to sell a message, for example explaining their rebuilding effort — or to deal directly on a one-on-one basis with ownership.
The last point, for example would have been key in the ROR trade, as one example. To have the power to stand up to the owners when the get too involved in franchise altering on-ice decisions that set the club back 3 years or more and help them realize the dire impact of emotional decisions.
As far as the roster, no he wouldn't be working trades for AHL contracts. He would review the detailed Roster Plans for the current season, 1 year, 3 years, 5 years. Asking the very tough questions...because he has lived once, twice, 10 times before.
I don't have the day to day job duties, nor does any organization have the same duties to that position...that is the point. Your ask is ridiculous. - IonSabres
I’ll give u the ROR trade example
I actually thought of that too
It’s not that I’m not for hiring a Hockey Ops guy to help in a situation like that should it arise again, it’s just that the ROR trade was 2yrs ago,
and i can’t really think of anything specific since then (as far as the roster goes) that a PoHO would’ve changed
I don’t think it’s nearly as big a deal as some make it |

Who else surrounds them to make the Sabres legit?
There are still holes to fill.
Even if all three develop into above average players, I still do not trust that we will get the pieces around them to make it worth while.
How much time do we have to wait also? Is it okay to go another 2 seasons of mediocre hockey at best? - thatsapickle
Eichel, Skinner, Sam, Olofsson, Mitts & Cozens looks like a pretty nice top6 to me should the kids work out
And i think that could be as soon as next year
That should be 2 good scoring lines
The Girgs-Larsson-Okposo line is a good defensive unit
And then you’ve got the other bottom6 line made up of Asplund, Ruotsalainen & Tage,
all young with skill & potential
Plus Lazar if we bring him back
And that doesn’t include if we make a move to bring in any more forward help |

How about a discussion of sending tage to Rochester last December?
Starting mitts in Rochester or sending him down late last season?
Maybe after seeing the hole at 2c last year a discussion of the plan at 2c this year, and relaying on mitts and mojo (a 3lw) for 2c?
How about a discussion about starting a season with so many d men and putting a time table on moving one, even if it’s a perceived loss?
Maybe a discussion of switching sheary to a rw?
Or giving a few of the kids a shot earlier?
Or in season how detrimental it could be to the d and monte to continue playing 7 of them and having monte swap sides and partners shift in and shift out...
Sure, I can’t think of ANYTHING an experienced hockey president could discuss with his young GM and guide the ship just a little better.... I’m sure Kim is up on all these hockey matters...

Relying on a rookie and a kid still trying to find his way in the AHL! Great plan... is this Botts himself? |

If Mitts busts, we’ve still got Cozens for 2C
So I’m not too worried |

It’s happening!!! 8 d men start tonight! Then 9 d men! Come one Ralph! You can do it, 6 d on the back end and entire line of d men up front!
I can’t wait! Get Nelson and Gilmore up here stat! |

You act like he makes the game day line-ups, he can't help players get injured and unfortunately not having enough depth in the system yet. And he worked for a pretty good GM in Pittsburgh, had a hand in building a few Stanley Cup Teams. Has he made mistakes, sure, every GM does. Maybe he is just trying to build this team right, it's taking longer then everybody hoped, but that goes back to before him to. We can all female dog as much as we want, he isn't going anywhere right know. I would think the next 7 to 8 months are huge for Botts, he has no more excuses. |

Just listened to the Duane Rant...I don't blame that guy at all. We have all been raised Sabres fans, either by our families, geo-location with the team being the closest, or the players we have grown to adore growing up (Hasek, May, Peca, Briere, etc.).
Questions need to be answered and it looks extremely poor as an organization to not discuss their mistakes (I'm not even talking about the GMJB and his mistakes either). IF Terry and Kim came out and said something along the lines of, "we know your frustrations with the team over the 50th anniversary and here is plans X,Y, and Z of what we will be doing to manage the rest of the celebration," it would go along way...but acceptance is one of the hardest things to do for people who think they are "above" their fans.
I just can't anymore. I will watch but I will never attend another game (remember, living 3+ hours away, traveling in weather, paying 15+ dollars to park my car, buy a beer for 10 dollars) just to watch what is transpiring on the ice...a lot needs to change. The Bills did the "roster surgery" in three years (going to the playoffs in two of those three)...contracts are contracts but showing you care (Botts, Pegula families, several players) can go a long way with the fans and the growth of hockey in Buffalo for the youth.

mitts has done next to nothing in Rochester since being sent down... Cozens is at least a year away still and probably more but it does sound like a botts plan,I'll give you that.
Girgs-Larsson-Okposo. ummmm seriously who cares.

U act like those discussions don’t happen now
It’s not just Kim-> Botts -> Kruger
You do know that, right?
And no,
a PoHO isn’t gonna mandate to the COACH (not even Botts) switching Sheary to RW
That’s a lineup decision that the GM doesn’t even make, let alone someone higher up in mgmt
Idk...
U really think a PoHO would’ve demanded to Botts a different route at 2C?
What would he have said when Botts comes back to him with “they want Risto + Cozens + a 1st”
OR
We’ve got MoJo here in case Mitts needs more time, but i think we can get by with him for a year and Mitts &/or Cozens have really good shots to contribute next season if not this one
If anything...
I think the PoHO would push towards developing Mitts & Cozens instead of trading either ++ for a 2C now
I’d think the long term goal would be more in their sites |
