Does Vancouver have anything to offer for Barrie? They could probably use him for the playoffs and would have a good chance of signing him.

I doubt they blew that ELC year to make him the 7th d-man. They had to have made the decision that he's in the top 6 and going to be in there for good.
- The Law

There has been some interwebz speculation that this is the new thing.

Burn the first year, so his numbers are weaker as an RFA.

Of course, he will still get multiple offer sheets, because Leafs...

Muzzin type deal

1st, and couple prospects

Leafs cant really afford a 1st.
So Kap/AJ, Bracco and another pick/prospect

- senstroll

Flip Barrie for a 1st ....keep Kap/AJ

Please.

Even in is sheltered mins Sandin has shown better results although in a small sample size...

Dermott hasn’t improved and hasn’t given the Leafs a reason to give him more mins. The only reason he is getting them is because of injury but at this rate Sandin will surpass him and he’ll be right back where he started.

- Santo_44

Let's play apples to apples. First 10 games of their NHL career:

Dermott:
152 5v5 minutes
55.69CF%
8 GF, 2 GA
xGF%: 52.78%
HDCF: 53.33%
1 goal, 3 assists
GV: 10, TK: 4
16 hits
7 Blocked Shots

Sandin:
130 5v5 minutes
56.43 CF%
6 GF, 2 GA
xGF%: 53.89%
HDCF%: 48.08
1 goal, 4 assists
GV: 5, TK: 0
12 hits
5 Blocked Shots

The level of competition is very important when you consider this. More minutes comes with more mental fatigue and better competition comes with less time to react, think, and do.

As I said, I have little doubt that Sandin has a significantly higher ceiling than Dermott, but writing Dermott off because Sandin is so much better after 10 games is patently untrue.

I think he absolutely would. I think he's a 1st + a prospect.

He's 13th among all defensemen since Keefe took over in expected goals for. This is a direct relationship to his roving style of play. His overall expected goals ratio is less because his defensive side is weak - but teams typically take this guy and play him as their 3/4 at 5v5 and #1 on the power play.

Couple that with his negligible cap hit and he should have huge value as a rental.

If you need to kick your PP into gear and you need a rover because they're all on San Jose, and you want him for less than $3m dollars, bring a 1st and a prospect and leave it in an envelope under the mat.

Sundin looks like the real deal. Dermott is 23. Don't give up yet. The vast majority of d men get better as they approach 30 and play their best hockey around 30 years old. Guys that are really good really young are the exception.

I’m not going to lie to you:

If the Leafs took him out of the lineup, I don’t think I would even notice. I can’t think of a single game - hell, a single play - where he has impressed me.

I don’t think he is a bad player.

I just think the next guy in line could do the job just as well.

If we can get a 1st rounder for him, pull the trigger. Then figure out if we flip the pick or keep it.

I would be willing to bet a beer and plate of nachos he plays for the Canucks next year. Don’t ask me why.

Not gunna trade him for anything involving conditionationism.

Very true.
The people writing off dermott were probably the same ones who raved about him after 10 games

Tough to compare, teammates make more of an impact than comp. and the teammates have improved and matured a little.

Just a thought

I would be okay with bringing Hainsey back for the right price if the plan is to go for it this year. The other options are pretty expensive or have large cap hits going forward. I also like Daley on the cheap.

Could it be that people expected progression and have since failed to see much, if any, and are thus disappointed?

nah, flavour of month. The mediator has spoken.

I have no problem with him being a 3rd pairing ...still got something to prove ..type. Re-up for a year or two at something less than 2 milly per year and lets see if he works his way into the top 4.

I think his future may hinge somewhat on whether Muzzin is re-signed.

This pat offseason I’d more inclined to agree with you. Now not too sure & cannot see his contract as a fit.

We can't even get rid of fu3king Marincin...Dermott should not be going first.

BUT....left side is getting crowded with Sandin doing so well.

I would guess for CAP reasons Dubas & Co might have wanted the left side to be:

Reilly
Dermott
Sandin

But I would go with Muzzin on a 3 year deal...if possible of course...

Reilly
Muzzin
Sandin
Dermott

Then getting a Manson type is critical IMO. Would round out the D perfectly. After the TDD or next year:

Reilly, Manson
Muzzin, Holl
Sandin, Dermott/Liljigren
Dermott/Liljigren

I feel like that is a strong set up and wouldn't give up on Dermott yet. He can skate, good with gaps, good stick and tries to be physical. A year or two more in the league the kid will be strong, especially as a 5LD when Sandin moves up to #3LD.

Reilly, Manson
Sandin, Liljigren
Dermott, Holl

From last thread:
Anyone who agrees with you is probably just another guy who makes up random opinions in his head to be different than everyone else.
- Santo_44

i might agree if I’d ever seen hintz play👍

i’d like them to trade perimeter willi for another legit defensive defenseman👍🏿
