Sandin will absolutely be better than Dermott. I think he has a higher ceiling and plays a much calmer and smarter game. Dermott is still good, despite some of his more obvious gaffes in the last few weeks or so.
Sandin is still playing sheltered minutes largely, and limited, too.
If he is anointed Lidstrom v2 he can only disappoint you. - Monkeypunk
Agreed.. It's too soon to say Sandin will be the next (insert hall of fame defenseman name here) |

Dermott has played sheltered mins his whole career. He was trusted slightly harder mins the last few weeks and he failed miserably. - Santo_44
He needs to be given the opportunity to acclimate and grow into the role. Continuing to shelter him wasn't helping him grow. A person doesn't fail miserably in 10 - 15 games. A person begins to learn what they need to do in order adapt and begins that process. Dermott is a smart and capable defenseman who is probably a 3-4 guy; likely more of a 4, but that's not someone that grows on trees. |

Sandin has some Marneresque moves when he carries the puck through the neutral zone. Very shifty |

Does Vancouver have anything to offer for Barrie? They could probably use him for the playoffs and would have a good chance of signing him. |

Maybe. He's 23. His peers on the blueline are 25, 26, 27, 27, 28 and 30. He has played 138 NHL games, so really he's in his second season in terms of garnering experience.
If he was a poor skater, or cowardly, or physically incapable or a poor hockey IQ, you could begin to peg his role better - but he doesn't. He is capable or more than capable in all of the aforementioned areas. With experience, I think he'll reach his ceiling. |

Even in is sheltered mins Sandin has shown better results although in a small sample size...
Dermott hasn’t improved and hasn’t given the Leafs a reason to give him more mins. The only reason he is getting them is because of injury but at this rate Sandin will surpass him and he’ll be right back where he started. |

After 10 games? - PatC80
His whole tenure in the Leafs organization.
Better than Dermott ever was with the Marlies, while being younger.
Better than Dermott was when he first played on the Leafs.
Better than Dermott when Dermott was the one getting sheltered minutes on the third pair with Ceci.
Dermott has sucked since playing top-4 minutes. Not saying I would play Sandin 20 minutes a night, though.
Once Rielly comes back, Sandin should play over a Dermott as the 3LD. Maybe Dermott plays on the right side? |

Don’t see us doing much. His ask won’t fit into the team structure either. |

At what cost though? Can we really afford him? - PatC80
Muzzin type deal
1st, and couple prospects
Leafs cant really afford a 1st.
So Kap/AJ, Bracco and another pick/prospect

Leafs Nation has always over-rated Dermott.

Can we stop trying to trade Barrie.
The guy provides a lot offensively.
Defensively? Not a whole lot but as long as Rielly is injures Barrie isn’t going anywhere. They simply don’t have enough players to play in a non sheltered role in the middle of a playoff push. |

He has always had the tools but 3 years later he has shown zero progress in translating those tools well.
For now he is just a 3rd pairing d that can move the puck well against lower comp.
I’d use him as a trade chip while his value is still shiny. |

What if we kept Kap and traded them Johnnson/Dermott?
The ducks were looking to add a D...they almost traded Kase for Faulk.

I know it’s only been 9 games, but I truly think it’s time to switch it around:
How much does Lidstrom compare to Sandin? |

I doubt they blew that ELC year to make him the 7th d-man. They had to have made the decision that he's in the top 6 and going to be in there for good. |

He just hasn’t gotten any better and hasn’t given us a reason to believe he will get much better...he has some good tools and is still young but no way in hell can we realistically bank on him providing anything above 3rd pairing duties the next few years. |

My guess is they are happy to give him the Tavares treatment:
Wait until July 1 and hope he wants to come home. |

trade for Manson, give them whatever they want

How many minutes did Manson get for that hit? Probably got an extra 2 for bumping Pasternak's stick afterwards too. |
