That one is against their cap. they had a free buyout and for some reason did not take it.
- RogerRoeper

Didn't they get a free pass because he didn't respect the rules of his contract or something?

It's a mystery.

Just like how Tampa can somehow afford every player or trade their expensive contracts for decent returns while other teams pay to get rid of them.

Nevermind, it's not a mystery, it's bullpoop.

I wish the Leafs had the same luxuries as the Pens and Lightning.. We wouldn't get a 1st rd pick for guys like J.T Miller.. We would have to include a 1st rd pick in any J.T Miller trade.

BTW,
I saw a post on Twitter destroying Nylander for having a pony tail. Nothing about his big night. LOL. people are so dumb with their hate.

Usually when people result to personal attacks take it as a win. They are just angry they were wrong.

I find it odd people nitpick a star 22 year-olds salary. Does anyone care if Marner gets 10.8? All those guys who signed 2-3 year deals will be looking for as much or more soon enough.

Yeah, Laine signed for much less...but he's RFa again after next season...

- RogerRoeper

If we're being fair and objective, the answer is yes and no.

Laine is making $6.75 x 2. Let's say that next year he rips the league a new one and gets Matthews' money x 7.

That's an AAV of $10.5m x 9 years.

Marner is making 10.9 x 6. It's not likely his AAV will lower at the end of that term, so he'll have a higher AAV than Laine at the end of it.

In fact, had they given Marner a 2 year bridge deal of $7.5m - which is sort of unprecendented, and then managed to give him Matthews' money for 7 years, the AAV on that would have been $10.7. Had they gone with 3x9 (again unprecendented), followed by 6x12, the AAV would be slightly higher than he's at now at 11 - but it would have given us $2m in flexibility for 3 years prior to the new media deal.

I think they handled the contract poorly. You want that much - you give me term. Otherwise, let's go shorter, keep you RFA, and then deal with the new amount then.

We'll see how the RFAs go over the next couple of years. If values trend WAY up, then this was a good move.

Nylander performing in the regular season was to be expected.

What might anger fans is if that production doesn't remain in the playoffs.

Well if the Leafs make the playoffs that is.

- Scabeh

Agreed.
But thats months away.

Hopefully

And Edmonton has returned the favour by wasting their cap on crappy players who are vastly overpaid.
Their cap is a disaster. it's littered with bottom 6 guys you can't move.

- RogerRoeper

Chiapet did a number on them.

I thought that was only with Voynov, with Richards this is the final year for their penalty. After this season, the $1.32M is off the books, I think.

The issue is if you go shorter you get even bigger cap hits on their next deals. No way star cap hits are not going up. Dubas looked at the projection with the new U.S tv deal and Seattle.
Bettmean was getting a boner talking about the upcoming U.S TV deal during All-star weekend.

No, but they got to terminate it which saves them a poop ton of cap versus a buyout.

I think people (myself included) were hoping to have Matthews/Marner for 7 years with no chance to move on as a UFA.

Also as an aside...how the (frank) did Marcus Pettersson get 4mil from the Penguins?

- AdamFrench

20,125,875+874,125 = 21,000,000 for 6 years.

seems like cap circumvention to me.

Does that mean they have $11m in dead cap next year?

Because of Chia, they were able to retain a portion of Lucic's contract.

Quick also signed for 3 more years at 5.8M.

There's no way this team will be competitive anytime soon. No matter how good Kopitar and Doughty might be.
