Kadri is a good player, I really like him, but he screwed up 2 years in a row, you can't be too disappointed he's gone. - prock
Not at all.
He had to go
Just pointing out how much he was hyped here and then not when gone having a good year.
I like kerfoot.
Specially his name

I find it odd people nitpick a star 22 year-olds salary. Does anyone care if Marner gets 10.8? All those guys who signed 2-3 year deals will be looking for as much or more soon enough.
Yeah, Laine signed for much less...but he's RFa again after next season... - RogerRoeper
I think people (myself included) were hoping to have Matthews/Marner for 7 years with no chance to move on as a UFA.
Also as an aside...how the (frank) did Marcus Pettersson get 4mil from the Penguins? |

Of course.
A lot of fans changed their minds about him while he was a Leaf. I think management were sick if him as well. - Santo_44
I am one of them. After his 2nd playoff suspension in 2 years, I soured on him |

I think DeMelo is a decent player. But I think you end up paying a serious premium to deal with your rivals. When I look at these things, I typically discount Montreal, Buffalo and Ottawa simply because you have to pay more to buy from them.
If I'm playing a game of "all defensemen we could trade for", the first thing I do is eliminate teams that are in playoff contention or on the cusp of contention - meaning they haven't given up. There are some cusp teams that are confusing. I think Nashville and Minnesota should probably seriously embark upon a rebuild, but given their place in the standings, I don't know where their management sees them. Or teams like Buffalo who might miss this year, but aren't really in rebuild mode inasmuch as they are in building mode. The other thing I do is just eliminate contracts longer than 3 years into the future - just to filter out "career" guys. This means that some players like Severson or Spurgeon get removed - but Spurgeon is probably removed because of his cap hit anyway.
I get:
Rentals:
Sami Vatanen
Brenden Dillon
Ben Hutton
Erik Gustafsson
Expires in 2021:
Alec Martinez
Erik Gudbranson
Patrik Nemeth
Expires in 2022:
Hampus Lindholm
Calvin De Haan
Josh Manson
Olli Määttä
Connor Murphy
Will Butcher
If I'm being honest about it, I think Jersey fancies themselves as getting better, so they probably don't want to trade Butcher. Chicago is still fringey but they have some youth there. Murphy is 26 and affordable. I wouldn't move that contract yet unless I start to sink or someone knocks my socks off.
Really, on the 2022 expiry guys, Anaheim should be blowing it up, but now you're looking for a higher value package because there's 2+ years involved.
Which brings us back to the same list we keep circulating!
Manson
Lindholm
Dillon
Vatanen
Martinez

I would take Marner also, but that has nothing to do with Nylander.
I also think Nylander is currently providing better value based on the contracts.
But I still take Marner.
Both things can be true |

In fairness they did sign longer than any big name RFA aside from Aho for obvious reasons.
The 7-8 year deals are going away. McDavid made a massive blunder |

The biggest issue is overpaying supporting players. It's not giving 22 year-old stars big contracts.
How good do the Leafs look now saying bye bye to JVR? He's regressing, slow and one-dimensional and makes 7.5 million per. Dubas gets it.
Jason Spezza is superb value for a bottom 6 guy. There's no need to pay big $ for those guys. |

Kerfoot isn't bad. Nothing spectacular. If there were issues fitting players under the cap though, he'd be one of the first to go in my books. When the Leafs are totally healthy, he really doesn't bring anything the Leafs don't already have several times over. But with injuries to Hyman, Tavares, Marner, Soup, Trevor Moore, there hasn't been the surplus the Leafs might normally have on forward. |

Nylander performing in the regular season was to be expected.
What might anger fans is if that production doesn't remain in the playoffs.
Well if the Leafs make the playoffs that is. |

You could very well be right about the contracts from RFA's. Not sure McDavid made a mistake though. Kid has the heart of a champion and gave Edmonton the best chance to be competitive without pissing off the Player's Association. |

It's a mystery.
Just like how Tampa can somehow afford every player or trade their expensive contracts for decent returns while other teams pay to get rid of them.
Nevermind, it's not a mystery, it's bullpoop. |

And Edmonton has returned the favour by wasting their cap on crappy players who are vastly overpaid.
Their cap is a disaster. it's littered with bottom 6 guys you can't move. |
