But doesn’t that mean either Pettersson or Marino will have to be exposed to the expansion draft? Unless JR tells Seattle “Here’s a 1st round pick if you take Jack Johnson”

Marino is exempt.

Marcus Pettersson signed for 5 years. $4M/per
- chimpira

Many expected something along those lines. It's a little bit higher than I expected though (It would be around $3.5M IMO)

Fresh news...

"The Penguins have agreed to terms with defenseman Marcus Pettersson on a five-year contract extension.

The deal will kick in at the beginning of the 2020.21 season and run through the 2024.25 campaign, carrying an average annual value of $4,025,175."

I'm surprised they're taking that long to go back to practice.
- MattStrat

It's a bye week not allowed to practice.

Whose contract runs out next? I'd tend to agree too.

Marino is the next one up but not until after next season.

Yea, because long breaks don't affect Philly.

Well the deal is what it is. And like someone else said that's not a bad price at all for the top 4.

At 5 years I though he might go a bit below 4 mill per but I dont really care all that much about 500k or less. This is right around what most of us thought.

Oh no it's actually like real rest. The league doesn't allow practice.

So does this change plans on a winger with term? Or are we still good to go that route?

We should not give Murray this big deal he apparently wants, trade his rights the off-season. Then we only have 4 RFAs to deal with McCann, Kahun, Simon, Jarry.

Ideally I'd like to have both Murray and Jarry next year for about a combined 7 or 8 mill cap hit....think that's possible? 4/5ish per for Murray and 2/3ish for Jarry.

I can just see it now if Murray gets traded away...the season long search for a competent back up...or starter as well if Jarry slips...

I'm not totally sold on DeSmith being a reliable goalie.

I know Jarry has looked great in limited sampling, but so did Patrick Lalime. I'm not saying he's bad, I'm just saying Matt Murray (for better or worse) is a proven Stanley Cup-caliber goalie. If Jarry falters in the playoffs this season, or if Murray regains his starter status and leads the Pens to another Cup (or at least SCF), do you still do the same? I get not giving a goalie a long-term, big-$$ deal, but Flyers fan will tell you what shaky goaltending can do to a Cup contender.
