Hawks are in a position where they can retain money on a contract or take on a bad contract due the 12 million in cap space they have. So its not of the question that team asks the retain money on players contract to make a trade happen but bowman better get a good prospect or a 1st or 2nd for doing it in return otherwise no.

Hawks would have to retain 3M of Saad's salary next year too when they will be up against the cap.

Rutherford states that he is in win now mode and is looking for a top 6 forward to replace the injured Guentzel.

How does Saad for UFA Golchulnyk, (to make the dollars work for Pittsburgh), Sam Poulin, and the Pens #1 sound?. Or is this too rich for Pittsburgh/

- LAHawk

Saad isn't a rental. So maybe it would be a 2nd instead of a 1st. Want nothing to do with Galchenyuk but whatever. Poulin would definitely have to be part of the deal if it were me.

Saad is not the type of player you need to retain salary to move, imo. If they Hawks are retaining salary then there better be a 1st and a top prospect coming back at the very least.

Saad is their best defensive forward and any deal to move him has to be an overpay to me.

Hawks only move him if they are clearly out of the playoff picture if no offers blow the hawks out of the water then no don't trade. Hawks be better team the following year with saad on their team. I only mention to retain some of his contract to get a higher return back to the blackhawks.

Can't do that. Have to retain the same amount of salary each year of the contract.

Over at the Athletic, one of the NHL writers is speculating which players will be selected by Seattle in the expansion draft. He has Maatta being selected from the Hawks.

Rosters will change a lot over the next 17 months as GMs jockey around ahead of the draft, but I will go along with Maatta being taken. Hawks have to open up a spot for a young D man by then.

But the money would also be retained next year where we need every dollar we can get.

Why I propose effectively 2 firsts. We are getting the stench of Galchanak for the remainder of the year. They aren't giving up a good player because they are in win now mode. My assumption is he Hawks are out of it, of course if there is a realistic chance of making the playoffs, I would not do this deal either.

3 scenarios for the Hawks in the upcoming weeks leading up to the TDL.

1. Play well, especially during the western trip, gain ground on teams ahead of them in the standing and find themselves in a playoff position. I think Stan will stand pat and go with the team that got there. He knows he can't trade off assets and become a buyer.

2. Play .500 hockey and remain a bubble team. IMO Stan will also stand pat hoping the current roster can sneak into the playoffs.

3. Hawks go on a long losing streak and are several points out of a playoff position. I think he may make some trades. If he hasn't made any progress in negotiations with Lehner he may be history.

Odds are no major trades involving the Hawks will happen.

Agree one thing though if hawks and lehner do not come to a contract extension by the tdl then deal him and see what hawks can get. Especially if he is asking for 7 million or more. To me 5 × 5 or 4 years at 6 million no higher.

Can they afford to not have a top notch goalie? Compare Lehner and Crawford, stats-wise there’s a huge difference this season. Without Lehner they’re easily a bottom 2 team.

I’d sign Lehner, even if it meant losing Saad (and I’m a big Saad fan).

Would trade him for a ~15 or higher #1 in a heartbeat. A lower #1 plus something.

If Dinky is XeBrincat, many teams would like to try to unearth him from Chicago roster....but they won't offer much in light of his poor performance. Point wise especially bad. A 5akented scorer like DeBrincat should be given opportunity to bounce back. Probably means a different training regimen since he is way too young to have list ability. Actually his poor season could mean he has to settle for less money? Only a fool rusheds out to trade him just because he had a poor season.

We drafted him and he has produced for us. No reason to think he won't again. Just not this season though. I like that he has shown so far he doesn't get injured which is important because you want to rely upon his scoring touch and not see him doing interviews from press box while injured.
