And we're back to the assumption that had the Sabres targeted a player and said here's all these random picks, the other team would be like o sweet ok

This is the dumbest comeback ever. Like no teams ever make trades for picks ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ™„

Precisely. It's the assumptions that mean nothing. I'm not saying it was or was not available. I'm simply saying that the entire argument centralizes on 'use pix get great player!!!'

While not impossible, that deal has to be available, and when that deal is available, a team getting the good player will make it every single time.

- TheSabresTaco

You're heavily implying it wasnt based of the logic of

"The move wasnt made"

Ergo

"A move wasnt available"

For that to be true, you have to assume that Botterill both knows a good deal when he sees it, and that he only makes good moves.

Both are highly debatable. He spent a majority of his summer assets on Vesey and Miller and ran out of ammo once he painted himself into a corner with his cache of premium RHD that no one wanted

Is there any case to be made for Botterill doing a good job?

All I can come up with is he was cuffed on the ROR trade from ownership so he gets a pass, and then the organizational goal this year was not to be good.

Its a reach, because the moves he made don't even fit that. I'm just scared that ownership thinks steady ship is the way to go and botts gets a free 5 year ride to destroy everything

A 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and add a 1st and Guhle (montour trade) prob could of got us a nice forward. Instead we have crap (montour is an ok middle pair I guess)
- Fattony1187

And those players were brought in to fill slots that should have been filled by players coming up through the system, but there wasn't any. Plus those picks were basically used in different years.

Not really, just two justifications for why it's ok that he's not

70% He's not as bad as GMTM

30% GMTM left him nothing

The main defense of him is that the last guy was more of a poop show

He was left nothing, most of these trades wouldn't have been made if there were prospects coming up to fill those slots, but there wasn't. Botts messed up at 2C and it's hurting this team, Mitts hasn't worked out yet and he didn't have a backup plan.

I certainly wouldn't say that. UPL, Cozens, hopefully Mittelstadt (not inc. Dahlin), Portillo, Johnson, Weissbach, Laaksonen.. a bit early for the late rounder guys.

Nope, but because all the 1st round picks graduated quickly, and the depth picks were mostly a travesty, the prospects with impact ability was virtually non existent. And outside the 1st round prospects, it likely still is. Portillo and UPL represent a fair chance though.

If you're thirsty for a reason Frolik was traded here for, this is the best you're going to get.

"There was definitely a synergy in the lineup when Johansson, Skinner and Sobotka played together," Krueger said. "Frolik gives us a lot of that kind of hockey. You never want to compare two players exactly, but the stability (Frolik) brings to any line he plays with. He's such a pro. He makes the simple decisions and solidifies them to be able to be a little more free to play offense.

"We did find that Johansson and Skinner, here and there, had some synergies in the 5-on-5 game, and we expect with Frolik, who's really been a good addition here to the group as far as playing within the framework we want him to play in, that they'll bring us a secondary threat all the time."

The majority of things that people like about this year's team were given to him by Darcy and GMTM. Eichel, Reinhart, Olofsson, the LOG line, Risto and Ullmark. The things people like that he added are Dahlin, Joker, Montour and Skinner

There is more than one uncomfortable parallel between this GM and the last one that people don't want to acknowledge. Trading draft picks, possible miss on a high 1st round pick, big contracts. Like GMTM with Eichel, his best success was being terrible enough to draft Dahlin
