Botts has shown he can pull off trades to get good players (Skinner, montour, joker) but what he hasn't shown is an ability to sit back look at the roster determine where a need is and fill it.. making trades for good players is only half of it - SabresFaninIndiana

He reminds me of that guy from the movie Office Space. The one who gets his desk moved into the basement and can’t find his stapler.

I wanted Lazar over Sobotka and the Vesey move was always questionable and "meh" to me. Was anyone excited about the Vesey trade? It was Sheary part deux, this time it's the guy we tried to trade for 3 years ago.
We all knew in July that there were too many defensemen - you included. Everyone on the Sabres planet thought this
On the Frolik point - "Clearly he can't, otherwise this move isn't made in the first place." This move is nonsensical in the first place when it's made in January when you're 10 points out of the playoffs - jcragcrumple
1. Lazar vastly improved at a role he needed to excel at to succeed in the NHL, over the course of this very season. Had he shown that improvement last season, he's not signing a vet minimum deal.
2. Of course I said too many dmen. That was also when it was almost an expectation that Risto was being traded. Circumstances have changed, including that Colin Miller has, to his own fault as well as conditions he can't control, regressed.
3. There's a distinct possibility that the Sabres want Frolik beyond this season and felt as though essentially trading Scandella for him was a good way to try him out for the rest of the season. The trade addresses nothing except role player depth, which is absolutely needed. But it doesn't address impact player necessity. Which you're never getting from a Scandella trade. Honestly, how much more did people expect to get from a Scandella rental trade. He was ultimately brought here to fill in the Sobotka role, except it's expected he will fulfill it in a better way. That line had early season success, so that element was clearly missed. |

yup.. there could be a debate on Risto i guess. but the rest are hole fillers and they are too small to fill the hole they are being put into or they are the wrong shape for the hole.. |

Reality for this season:
Oloffson Eichel Skunk
Skinner X Mojo
Vesey Lazar x
x Larsson x
Defense should be:
Dahlin Joker
Monty Risto
Borgen Miller
How many UFA's or expiring contracts are filling in the x's this year? This boxhead GM put blinders on this year and is only focused on money.
Ralphs not worried about playoffs, wonder where a coach would get that notion... |

Number 2 and number 3 - too many d men and not enough forwards - are inextricably linked because he didnt do his job over the summer.
You want to trade Scandella for Frolik in August? Great, it's still a mostly pointless move considering our need is for scoring, but I would get it. Doing it in January is pointless.
God help us if he wants to re-sign Frolik. Just keep signing and trading for crap, surely the results will improve.
All of these moves are a day late and a dollar short. Meanwhile he says he's looking for forwards because Sobotka and Thompson are hurt. One should have been bought out and the other didnt make the team this year.
He puttered around this summer trading for marginal players instead of addressing the real needs and this is what we got. A 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th for a bunch of extra crap we dont need |

A 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and add a 1st and Guhle (montour trade) prob could of got us a nice forward. Instead we have crap (montour is an ok middle pair I guess) |

Overarching point: Botterill did not make the moves for this team to consistently succeed. Regardless of the individual details.

And we're back to the assumption that had the Sabres targeted a player and said here's all these random picks, the other team would be like o sweet ok |

I mean that's exactly what he did with the Skinner trade, except these picks would have been better. You're operating under the assumption it wasn't available again which is no more provable than my assumption that it was |

Precisely. It's the assumptions that mean nothing. I'm not saying it was or was not available. I'm simply saying that the entire argument centralizes on 'use pix get great player!!!'
While not impossible, that deal has to be available, and when that deal is available, a team getting the good player will make it every single time.
Just because that's how Skinner was acquired, that doesn't mean a single interesting player in this league is available in that fashion. Finding a top 6 guy using solely picks outside the 1st round is a (frank)ing unicorn. |
