Yes he should have known that players won’t produce their previous results when not playing with NHL centers.
If you put Olofsson on a different line do you think he would produce what he has this year. Skinners production dropped when he was moved off Jack’s line.
You can’t trade for a winger and throw him in a line with AHL center talent and expect him to produce what he had in previous years with an NHL center.
A GM could and should know this. - Beethoven
Post of the year.
He should have overpaid for a 2C back in June via trade.
It would have had a multiplier effect on the wingers

I think the Sheary trade in a vacuum is probably his best move, but based on what we hear in interviews, he thinks Sheary is a top 6 forward to be relied on to score instead of depth. Which makes it a terrible move.

Vesey gets between 28-35 points a year. He's going to get that again. This is who he is. And yes, trading for Frolik in January is nonsensical when you're 10 points out of the playoffs. Miller is the 5th RHD on a team full of RHD.
Keep in mind, Skinner cost a 2nd, 3rd and 6th. So would you rather have the aforementioned 3, or one player of Skinner's caliber for the same price of a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th that he paid for those guys? - jcragcrumple

Lazar could have done the same job as Vesey
Miller is totally redundant on this team and not necessary
Asplund can do what Frolik does
The trades were unnecessary, especially considering that the primary defense for Botterill here is "he isnt interested in short term fixes"
He is interested in short term fixes, but his answers are answers to a question no one asked. - jcragcrumple
"Lazar could have done the same job as Vesey" - Name one person on the planet that thought this is July.
"Miller is totally redundant on this team and not necessary" - Name one person on the planet that thought this in July.
"Asplund can do what Frolik does" - Clearly he can't, otherwise this move isn't made in the first place.
I'm not going to sit here and pretend I'm super impressed with the job he's done. I know what your stance is, so I'm not going to bother fighting you on it. I just think reality should be explored a bit more.

My main central gripe with Botterill is that he wasn't able to either foresee this issue and/or pull off a trade for this particular need. And if neither of these scenarios are true, the only other possible explanation was 'well, we're not good enough to contend anyways, let's just see what happens."
Those are your only 3 possibilities. |

Christ.
Trading Reinhart, 99.9% of the time is at best a sidestep. When all value going both ways is all accounted for.
When the Oilers offer Draisaitl for Reinhart and a 1st, welp, cya Sam. Otherwise, he's staying here. |

I applaud Botts for making the Nylander for Joker trade instead of saying “I have a surplus of RHD I don’t need another one”
It’s easy to hate the Miller trade now that we made the move for Joker but I perceive it differently. - Pegullaville
Botts has shown he can pull off trades to get good players (Skinner, montour, joker) but what he hasn't shown is an ability to sit back look at the roster determine where a need is and fill it.. making trades for good players is only half of it |

I wanted Lazar over Sobotka and the Vesey move was always questionable and "meh" to me. Was anyone excited about the Vesey trade? It was Sheary part deux, this time it's the guy we tried to trade for 3 years ago.
We all knew in July that there were too many defensemen - you included. Everyone on the Sabres planet thought this
On the Frolik point - "Clearly he can't, otherwise this move isn't made in the first place." This move is nonsensical in the first place when it's made in January when you're 10 points out of the playoffs.
Reality explored. |
