This is definitely true. If Botts wants an asset of any kind, and/or simply to purge him, he probably needs to retain some. I would be sincerely impressed if he didn't hold any retention.

According to Vogel, Botts wants to be under the Cap by the amount of Bonus money earned by players on their ELC potentially $3-4m.
Retaining 50% of Bogo's contract is a big step in that direction, holding less is gravy.

Unless Botts is getting something great in return, I don't think he will retain anything since he's a UFA after this season.

the purpose of retaining is to open salary for something actually useful is what probably will be a different deal. Don't think he bothers with a late pick for the sake of retaining.

Instead of giving up something big, the Blackhawks could move a third-round pick and maybe a forward prospect from Rockford. Someone who the Blackhawks don’t plan on re-signing."

If Botts can get a 3rd and a prospect from the Blackhawks for Frolik that would be a heck of a deal. Even getting just the pick would be a win.

Earlier in the a article he mentioned trading a 4th round pick for Trevor VanRiemsdyk. Bogo, even with his decline in play, is arguably still better than TVR. If they could send him and Frolik for a 3rd, a 4th and a prospect I'm sure no one here would be complaining, even if we retain 1/2 Bogo's salary. Actually, that's not true. Some here will still complain.
