For the later picks, I would bet he does. From what I've read, most GM's really only familiarize themselves with the top 50 or so prospects, they have too much on their plate to dig deeper which sounds pretty reasonable to me.

But he deserves credit for Boeser, Pettersson and Hughes for sure. And he probably knew about guys like Demko and Woo as well.

If Brackett and JB were on the same page for PodK pick then not much of an issue.

Maybe the non-Euro scouts raised some opposition since there was so much emphasis on Americans and Canadians that draft.

Plus the uncertainty that PodK would extend his KHL contract. He just turned down an offer at the draft.

Brackett has done a great job but what Benning doesn’t get enough credit for is establishing a clear prospect criteria for his scouts - scouts are all required to look for high character/IQ, skilled, ”last guy in the gym” types. Prospects with good character and superior work ethic will always surpass their peers. We can see it in the teams currently taking shape at the NHL and AHL level.

Despite the unreasonable level of hate, Benning has followed his plan (with some mistakes made). His early public commitments about remaining competitive was about him setting a high standard across the franchise...and the plan presented to ownership was to have some bad years, draft well, surround draft picks with veteran support, and rebuild the franchise in 4 years i.e. The plan all along.
