I almost just threw up in my coffee....although that's a tame one for reddit. I still say this is the greatest thing that has ever happened on the website:

“Then there is the long-term option, with Barzal acutely aware of the stalemate Mitch Marner just had with the Maple Leafs before he signed a six-year deal with an annual cap hit just short of $11 million. Toronto paid a hefty price to bite into some of Marner’s unrestricted years. Expect that deal to be a starting point for Barzal if that’s the way the Islanders want to go.

I love Barzal think he’s a great player with room to grow but he’s far from an 11 million dollar player at this point imo. To say 11 million per is a starting point to me seems a bit much. The first part of this excerpt is realistic with a bridge deal. All he has done this season is prove that he’s not worth that to me. Yet...

The Post sports writers always seem to enjoy stirring things up where the Isles are concerned. Larry Brooks is the worst, but Cyrgalis is only a little better. Instead of writing a positive article about Barzal winning the fastest skater at the All Star game, he chose to write about:

1. How much Barzal liked playing in Seattle, near his childhood home;

2. Barzal's benching by Trotz in the 3rd period against the Rangers;

3. How the defensive structure of the Isles suppresses Barzal's offensive stats; and,

4. A ridiculously high "starting point" of $11 million per season, if a longer term deal is sought.

Talk about shat stirring....

All true John but for whatever reasons and right or wrong going way back, Isles have had trouble keeping star players like Patty L, Turgeon, and JT. Trotts was no longer a star player and he ended up with the Pens. Hopefully things work out with Barzal.

I agree Cpt. 11 does seem a bit much. I can see a shorter type deal.

Turgeon was traded because Don Maloney is and was an idiot. He didn’t want to get traded. Pat Lafonatine was a contract dispute with Pat wanting some exuberant amount of money from what I remember so not sure they’re the best examples and I think you poked holes in your own point with Trottier. GM’s do dumb things but none of these players leaving were a matter of the Islanders not being able to hold on to them like Tavares.

In fairness the paragraph before described a bridge deal around 7 million while holding onto his RFA status. That of course is what we would all want not sure if Barzal’s agent would go for it?
