Yea I saw it but the rule is the rule

62.1 Spearing - Spearing shall mean stabbing an opponent with the point of the stick blade whether contact is made or not.
62.2 Double-minor Penalty - A double minor penalty will be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who spears an opponent and does not make contact.
62.3 Major Penalty - A major penalty shall be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who spears an opponent 62.5).
62.4 Match Penalty - A match penalty shall be imposed on a player or goalkeeper who injures an opponent as a result of a spear.
62.5 Game Misconduct Penalty - Whenever a major penalty is assessed for spearing, a game misconduct penalty must also be imposed.

I don't really understand how you can "stab a player with the point of the stick" but not make contact

"Your honor, the defendant stabbed Mr. Smith"

What injuries did the plaintiff suffer?

"None, the knife never actually touched him"

Not necessarily implying it was anyone here, although I'm sure there were a few...but I seem to recall a fair amount of people (in general) whining about him a lot. I think a lot of it was what you said, his usage under dippoops like Capuano and Doug which was really probably an indictment of Snow for never finding a way to upgrade the blueline.

Issue was Hickey in the top 4. Hickey can work as a 6th if you have a good top 4.

I was one of them when he was being used as a top four. I always said he was a fine 6/7.

So he made contact and it wasn't a 5 minute penalty? The Rule is the Rule. The refs ( Some ) use their discretion and or common sense when making a call.

So you can shove those rules up your ass because most of the refs in the NHL have

I have seen that called an unsportsmanlike like penalty in the past 100%. Just this year Barzal was speared in the back of the knee and it wasn't even called strip let alone a spear.

The good news is the Isles should not need Aho to be a sure fire top 4 player.
- ses111

Hopefully we won't need him at all. Barry's seen enough in practice to not throw him out there in a game over Dobson.

Fine with me. Isles are in a lot of trouble if they need Aho to be a top 4 player. If Aho needs to be traded or used as a 6th ot 7th dman down the line this works.

Would be fine with me as long as no one gets hurt and we only dress 6 D

Yes should read an attempted spear. Did you see the reports that toffolis asking price is a 2nd round pick?

Yes no injuries. I would not be getting a look at Aho even if it is to rest a dman. Maybe Aho can be used in a deal?

I remember seeing Staple say it might take a first to land him (which I thought seemed absolutely absurd) and then walking that back a little when someone else reported that he's probably worth something along the lines of a 2nd and a prospect, yeah. Can't remember who said the 2nd+prospect thing.

I'll be honest, unless this team rests up and gets their act together before the deadline on 2/24 I'm not really sure they should be making any significant moves.

edit: Problem this year will be that:

a) the best player has already been traded and what's realistically left out there isn't overly attractive

and

b) that there's going to be a lot more buyers than sellers which I think is going to drive prices up. All four divisions have pretty tight playoff races.

Honestly who knows. All depends who will offer what and how much they really want him. Market changes yearly especially at the deadline.

from Friedman's 31 thoughts:

MSG’s Steve Cangialosi reported last Saturday that Travis Zajac told him, “I’ve thought about the situation a lot. (New Jersey) is where I want to be.”

Reached out to Kurt Overhardt, who represents Zajac. He said, “We were presented with something, but Travis was not willing to waive at this time. We’ll see about the future after the season.”

He’s got one more year at $5.75 million, and a no-trade clause. Overhardt would not discuss the scenario, but I’d bet all of our mortgages it was the Islanders.

I cannot see any big Isles moves for a top 6 forward. Maybe a 3rd line forward. I think pretty much this group gets another shot in the playoffs and if it's out in the 2nd round again, Lou has to do something big in the offseason somehow.

He made the biggest offers to tavares and panarin what more can he do if they wanted to go somewhere else?

I'm not blaming Lou for these two players. Something will need to be done trade wise though in the offseason if top FA's are not available or do not want to sign here. Can only go with pretty much this same roster for so much longer. This is not a young team overall.

No issue with the Barzal benching whatsoever, but it was kind of odd that Mayfield didn't miss a shift after taking a painfully stupid and selfish penalty.
- eichiefs9

I'd say you reach different players in different ways and a good coach hopefully knows which buttons to push with which players. We also don't know if the Barzal thing was impulsive based on this one game or part of an ongoing conversation between him and Trotz...maybe Barzal exhausted all his warnings.

That said, it's not the first unnecessary retaliation penalty Mayfield's taken after the whistle, so that probably does need to be addressed at some point. There's "protecting your goalie and teammates," and then there's, well, what happened last night.

The last few games Trotz has said some players are playing a me game and not a team game and how they need to play as a group not individuals. I think barzal was spoken to several times and this was the outcome

This is why Leddy might need to be moved in the offseason. Maybe Bailey so Eberle and Wahlstrom are the top two RW? Lou will need to get creative if top FA's are a No.

Trotz loves Leddy. I thought that might happen this past summer but I wouldn't get your hopes up. Nothing is impossible, but I don't think they're moving Leddy. If they do, it's gotta be one hell of a return.
