Staple just tweeted

Trotz says Barzal benching was “100 percent” about putting individual play ahead of the team. Not in a mood to elaborate.

- nyisles7

I love Trotz. If you watched the end of that second period Barzal's issues which have been getting progressively worse went to whole new levels. When He did not skate at all on that one clearing attempt that ended up in the back of our net I was screaming at the TV. ..... Offsides on that play probably saved us from another horrific melt down loss.

Trotz benching him is fantastic. I hope he keeps doing that until Barzal starts to play the right way. the Non-stop turnovers and lack of skating in the D-zone has to stop. Team first... or u can go play with Ho Sang in the Bridge... no matter who you are

“I'm ecstatic with the two points, we were exhausted and we had to battle through it. It was huge for our psyche and the break. We’ve had so many games in a short period of time and we’re mentally and physically fatigued, the break is going to do us good.” - Barry Trotz

So are we Barry. It’s actually good to hear this. At least there’s a reason for their inconsistent, not being able to finish a complete game play. Really hoping we see a different team after this long break.

Agreed. Barzal has not been good for far too long now it had to be addressed.

Just watched the third period again from last night. NHL shift chart is wrong -- Barzal didn't leave the bench in the third.

Going to be very interesting to see the dynamic between Barry and Barzal going forward.

Agreed. Barzal will be fine. Kid's awesome, and he's been asked to drive the offense against the best defense pairs, on a team with not many other deadly offensive weapons, at a tough position, starting from just his second (now third) year in the league. And not on a team bumping along the bottom of the standings, but rather one that's playing tough, meaningful games every night. I think he's handled it all amazingly. He's worked on his game away from the puck and has willingly sacrificed personal stats for team success, all without any complaints. It took a player like Ovi how many years and coaches to arrive at that same mindset?

If Trotz has to send a reminder to Barzal once in a while, my reaction is, yeah, that should be expected given Barzal's age and pure-offense mindset up until a year ago. If anything, I'm surprised Trotz hasn't had to do it more often...that's a credit to Trotz as a teacher and to Barzal for his willingness to learn and adjust. I don't expect Barzal to sulk about this, seeing how there's been no sulking over any lessons up to this point.

As long as Barzal understands and can learn from it I'm fine with it.

Barry 100% holds the players accountable and they hold each other accountable. On one wall in the Islanders locker room it says "Accountability" in huge letters. Thats it other than the team logo.First thing he did when he arrived here.

The kid will learn. He's talented as hell but needs manage the puck, play the right way on both sides of the puck, and do it consistently game in game out. Saw this coming a while ago with his play lately, but it was others to blame

Keep it simple stupid.

He currently leads the league in Give-aways at 77 going into last night. Between that and his lack of effort in D-zone it really needed to be addressed. I was getting frustrated at it NOT getting addressed honestly. If you look at the highlights of the last 10 games a very large percentage of our Goals Against or other teams odd man rushes were a result of Barzal trying to do too much instead of making the safe play.

Yeah like I said this has been an ongoing Problem since this team started its skid. Unfortunately it’s not just him. The only way this team can be successful is playing as a unit and not as individuals. Barzal clearly has not been doing that. Happy to see Trotz doing what needs to be done.

He needed that hes been making lazy selfish plays of late and not keeping it simple. Hopefully he realizes it and gets back to playing a two way game after the break. 3 0 lead in the 3rd was a good time to do it as well and I'm sure they've tried talking to him about it off ice and it wasnt sinking in. Best way to get his attention is to sit him

No issue with the Barzal benching whatsoever, but it was kind of odd that Mayfield didn't miss a shift after taking a painfully stupid and selfish penalty.

Meh I’m still having a hard time believing that was even called it was not a spear. I guess he shouldn’t have done anything that could be misconstrued as one but that’s splitting hairs imo. Is it the players fault when there’s an albatross call? Mayfield has been pretty good last few games there’s a 0% chance he’s getting benched.

Because we needed Defenseman to close out the game. We were down to 5 really with Dobson getting 8 mins. Trotz mentioned it in the post game and I'm sure Mayfield heard about it from Trotz and his teammates.I thought Mayfield other than that stupid penalty was real good last night. Barzal's issues weren't with one play in one game. It's been an on going progression the last 10 or so games of playing a ME game instead of a team game. If Mayfield or anyone else on this team TO the puck as much as Barzal lately then they would get their ass planted on the bench as well maybe sooner than he did.

it should have never been a 4 minute spear. I get after the guys stopped the pushing a grabbing the ref say that's it and Mayfield gives him one more they typically will call it. I didn't have a problem with that it was stupid on Mayfilds part but again 4 minutes is an absolute (frank)ing joke. They could have also thrown a embellishment penalty on Lemieux in my opinion.
