Interesting article on TSN about Anaheim soaking up unwanted contracts and the Pens.

So basically we're trading for Gudbranson back with salary retained.
Pens probably aren't looking at it, but I'd love to send JJ away. |

Because They won’t be competing anytime soon. Rackell will probably be a UFA by the time they’re competing so getting Addison and a 1st would fit within their timeline. |

Martinez has played most if not all his career at left d so not an ideal Schultz replacement. He’s also quite injury prone. I’d def prefer Dillon if the goal was a left d.
I think schultz may as well be traded though. We do know that him and jj will eventually be terrible together. - 10inchTerror
No point of a left D unless for Dumo insurance. Martinez and Dillon both suck. |

Agree, I don't think Martinez is any better than Pettersson. |

Possibly. If I were JR I'd be willing to sell good assets for cost-controlled players. If there are better ones to be had for similar assets then of course you explore those. RD's are always harder to come by, so if one is available you don't want to hesitate.

I wasn't aware Martinez played the left side. |

My biggest issue with Martinez is his injury history. Even among penguins he would be on the lower end of healthy players. Whereas Dillon averages about 80 games per year and would add to a bit of physical intensity come playoff time. I do know we have zero interest in a left d though. |

Anaheim gm said pretty recently they would be willing to take on bad contracts for a good draft pick or prospect sweetener so not necessarily would a team be taking something back. Just an extra cost to make space if someone went after rakell, kase, or whomever |

Martinez has sucked for 3+ years now. That should be your biggest issue. |

Seems like Riiki could easily fill the spot of JJ. Except for maybe the PK. He's playing better this season but wasn't Riiki and Schultz pretty awful last year too? |

We should. Our LD with everyone healthy is ok, but it can be improved upon.
Even when healthy, I'd say Martinez is a guy that can fill a hole as a 4th D, but doesn't really move the needle. Agree that Dillon gives a little more, both as a player and as a bonus physical presence. |

I've liked Riikola's play, but he and Schultz both would need a far more solid defensive partner than each other.
Something I've thought of for next year is if they moved JJ and brought in a solid all around RD for the 3rd pair, I wouldn't mind starting the season with Riikola since POJ (who's having a good rookie year) will likely push for that spot at some point next season. |

Play styles have to fit the system. Chemistry isn’t a thing. Sometimes bad players (frank) everything up and we chalk it up to chemistry or effort or whatever makes you sleep at night. - Feds91Stammer
There’s a difference between something being unquantifiable and not productive to factor into decision making and something being fake. Chemistry is unquantifiable, it’s not fake. |

Go watch NFL or Boxing if you want to watch a bunch of mongoloids give each brain damage. - Murphy_Dump
First of all, the physical element of the game was part of the fabric of the game for decades. It wasn't just a bunch of goons beating the snot out of each other. Hockey was meant to be a physical game (like the NFL and boxing) and was much more enjoyable to watch until you youngsters started whining about how it was too violent. It wasn't a mainstream sport because of the violence but it will never be anything more than the number 4 sport anyway. It was a niche sport that had a rabid, cult-like following among a core base of passionate fans. While I still love hockey, it has become lame compared to the days when players like Ulf Sammelson and Darius Kasperitis, and Matthew Barnaby were heroes. Funny how people still stand and cheer whenever someone gets laid out with a solid but legal open ice hit or even when gloves are dropped. Also funny how this new generation of hockey fans points to speed and offensive production as the real catalyst for today's NHL yet, back when the physical element of the game was significant, guys like Gretzky and Lemieux were scoring close to 100 goals and putting up 200 points in a season (and yes I know Mario actually peaked at 199 points). You can call me a retard or a dinosaur or whatever else you want to call me but, if you haven't seen a game prior to 2000, you have no idea what real NHL hockey is all about. The game was so much more fun to watch than today's version. It had a little bit of everything, including way more scoring than today's NHL. |

What are your thoughts on Marcus Foligno? Admittedly I haven't seen a lot of him but he was a real pain to play against that last game. He'd be a better fit on that 4th than Chucky |
