It is ridiculous at this point. I don't see any make up calls coming.

Nope it's almost insane, I think barzal is on the list of divers and embellishes because he does it a bit and I think the refs dont call as much on him. Even so hes still near the top of penalties drawn

Eh, I enjoy the games better when there are fewer calls. It's one thing if one team gets like 4 power plays and the other team 0 or 1, but when each team only gets one power play, there's more flow. I don't know what the stats are game-by-game (overall the Isles are the fourth-least penalized team), but I seem to remember a lot of games where, even if they weren't getting power plays, they weren't getting called for many penalties either. I'll take that trade off...the more the Isles play 5 on 5, the better as far as I'm concerned as their special teams aren't all that great.

The Boston game was a bit of a raw deal with the OT penalty, especially in light of the non call when that guy was humping Eberle on the ground for about a minute and a half in the third. But, really, I can't put that any higher than, like, third on the reasons why the Isles lost that game. First would be their inability to put goals on the board when they were controlling play for so long. Dominating play is all well and good, but if you don't score, then one fluke or mistake erases all of the good.

Another reason...it's not that Varlamov was bad by any stretch, but he wasn't as good as Rask. I watched Rask make a few highlight reel saves and then watched Varly give up a slow, low shot from the point right through his legs with no deflection. Again, I thought Varlamov played well enough to win on most nights, but in a tight, low-scoring game like that, any mistake by the goalie matters, and Varlamov made one more than Rask did.

I'm in favor of letting the players play, but this is a matter of fairness. It's not simply that the Isles are last in PPs. They are way behind the second to last team and a statistical anomaly.

Yeah it’s pretty nuts. How those guys let some of the calls go the other night then call that Marchand spinorama in OT is beyond me. Most inconsistent, bogus, officiating I’ve seen since I started watching hockey. When you look at numbers like that you can throw the “conspiracy theory” title out the window. You can try the old style of play is causing it argument but that holds little water with the fact that they were playing the same style last season along with seeing the bias on occasion when watching the games.

Also, how about that “roughing” penalty against Mayfield? 😂😂😂

NHL referees believing that they should have the power to control certain things within the game (ie: blatant make-up calls or the fact that the rules change in the playoffs) is why it's a second-tier professional league. It's embarrassing.

I don't think he's much of a diver. We've seen the kid get mugged with no calls. He is so aggressive on his edges that's he hard to defend so its not surprising that he draws the calls he does.

Watch him a bit more, he always complains to the refs and as a ref that gets old quick. Not saying I don't make calls but shut up and play just like barry said

Yep, I hear you on that. They definitely deserve a lot more calls than they've gotten. But I will say that, during Isles games, it's not like they always call things super tight on the Isles while letting other teams get away with everything. Even with how few PP minutes the Isles have, there are still a couple of other teams (Dallas and SJ) that, overall, have more minutes than the Isles spent on the PK compared to minutes spent on the PP. I guess what I'm saying is the overall special teams time looks at least a little more normal when you factor in both PK and PP (although, still not very much in the Isles' favor...). Isles games in general just seem to have fewer penalties called overall compared to some other teams' games.

Exactly. It’s like they decide to make the game more exciting sometimes through penalties. Team is down by a goal in the third. They will 9 times out of 10 get a PP to give them an opportunity to tie it up unless they’re the Islanders of course😂.
I will never agree with the refs dictating a game. Just call penalties when you see them. That’s your job. Period.

That call on Mayfield right after we scored against the Bruins was absurd. He gets called for roughing when there wasn’t even a body check or any semblance of physical play during the “infraction”. Complete phantom call which was obviously done to “make the game more interesting”. The NHL is the only league I watch but I understand why some people can’t take it seriously when the officiating lends itself to comparisons with the WWF.

Yeah he chirps the refs quite a bit. It was on full display against the Bruins though I’ll say it was warranted for the most part.

There have been some games were the calls were lopsided against us quite a few actually especially earlier in the season that’s why it has been such a topic during games. There also have been some like you say where the penalties have been few and far between for both teams but the numbers wouldn’t be as lopsided as they are if the games were more evenly called albeit fewer penalties like you’re describing. Doesn’t make sense.

I disagree. I think he goes down way too easy at times. With that said he still gets mauled most times but I don't believe he has a tendency to embellish more then he needs to.
