It's pretty dumb if all you need is a guy for backup duty. Should have called up one of the other two.....both waiver exempt. Why risk it? Very strange move. Almost like there's more to it.
DiPauli also recalled. - madmike71
Guys don't have to clear waivers if they are being recalled on a emergency basis
Jarry probably has a minor injury and will not dress, therefor DeSmith can be called up and sent down without having to clear waivers |

Anything less than douggie Hamilton or mackinnon for Simon and we will riot. |

Regardless, this move makes no sense. Calling up DeSmith so Jarry doesn't have to sit on the bench for a night? - Rinosaur
Murray actual has been pulled this year. This feels like a "lack of faith" statement to me.
Unless they move DeSmith. But why would they bring him up to move him?
Or you could listen to Mike Sullivan: "The reason we’re calling up Casey is because we’re going to leave Tristan at home because we have a 5 o’clock game on Sunday (against Florida), back to back. We just think it makes sense. Tristan’s going to play against Florida Sunday.” |

It's all very odd to me. At least to me, I'm probably being irrational and just hoping a move was made that will buttress the loss of Jake.
The obvious reason is Jarry probably tweaked something, so they just want him to get rest, not practice or skate. There's a distinct possibility if he did tweak something they aren't sure if it's something that will keep him out a couple of games and just want to get ahead of it.
The reason they're giving IMO is just stupid and makes no sense. I think they're just being super secretive about a possible injury. |

Christ on the cross, Malkin could be playing with Kovalchuk but let’s put him with Simon. (frank)ing stupid. Get the fuc k out of here with “underlying numbers”. What a waste. |

Murray will start Sat and Jarry gets Sun - interestingly they called DeSmith to be backup Sat. DiPauli also recalled. - VeryModernMan

It will be a blast. Getting to the arena is a real pain the ass, but it's a great time at T-Mobile. |

Quit that, we distrust management and need conspiracy theories!
It's a little odd in hockey far as I know, but in baseball they do it all the time with starting pitchers. Might as well be in his own bed instead of an overnight flight if he's not playing. It's a good idea. |

It’s probably been asked and answered but is desmith waiver exempt? Seems dumb to risk the second string goalie in the organization to waivers. |

NYI lose top pairing defenseman Pelech for the season, obviously a big blow. He was great against Sid's line in the playoffs last year. |

There’s actually a weird loophole that automatically puts Simon on waivers by calling up Desmith. |

Correct. Related to CBA Reference 13.2(b). It's CBA Reference 13.2.1(c) otherwise known as the Grinder Loophole. |

No one else would play Simon. Pens haven’t even had enough injuries too justify his waste of a lineup spot. |

Yeah I finally watched that, no way on purpose. Unfortunate, but some players actually used to play in the nhl. |

Oh, come on. He totally extended his elbow and it's Perry so he doesn't get the benefit of the doubt. Unlike the Cooke hit which was a shoulder/upper arm with his elbow tucked, this one is not legal in any era. |

"When a player clears waivers [which DeSmith did in October] and is sent down and then is called up again, he does not have to clear waivers to be sent down again unless he has played ten games or has been "up" for 30 days."
DeSmith, "the second string goalie in the organization", is btw. 0.909 in 22GP. |
