writes blog telling people to temper expectations. trade happens. write blog telling people he wished more out of it. - Blackstrom2
Yes and I think Devil fans in general were like this too....most fans felt that we were going to only get a "rental" rate back but for some reason they thought a top prospect would come back also....kind of confusing. |

I know this is obvious, but Hall all but declaring he wouldn't be signing an extension regardless of where he was traded really diminished his trade value. Still, what I don't get is, what was the rush to trade him? There's no guarantee, but you'd figure if Shero waited until the deadline to deal Hall, then there might've been another team or two desperate enough to give up a little more to get Hall than what NJ got trading him in December. Why was it so important to trade him now? Is he that much of a headache in the locker room, or was Shero worried Hall would get hurt again before he could move him? It's not the return so much that surprises me as the timing of the move, and the seeming haste in which it was made. - Squatchy
I definitely agree that Shero screwed himself by trading him now. He scratched him for 2 straight games. You can't just add him back in the line up and ignore being scratched. That looked so bad.
Maybe it was fear of injury, maybe Arizona wanted him now to fit in. Could be the market was extremely small and likely wasn't heating up anytime soon. |

You do know that Martin (frank)ing Erat was traded as a rental for Filip Forsberg... Just let that sink in. |

Yeah, I don't think people realize that you can actually get good prospects back in these rental trades. |

Every fan base thinks they should get more than they do or that their player/players are better than they are. This wasn't an ideal trade but he was leaving regardless so it's better than nothing. |

Well Kevin Bahl was drafted 55th in 2018 and Zdeno Chara was drafted 56th in 1996 so maybe it'll work out the similarly.
Ouch. I hurt myself grasping at straws....
Whatever. It's done. |

Well, if Bahl turns into a 3-4 defensive defenseman then we basically got Larsson back in the trade plus a bunch of picks and prospects so if those turn into one other roster player than it's decent, right? |

It's definitely decent if not overly exciting. And it's not a disaster like with Tavares, Parise, or Kovalchuck. Although not paying Kovy for this season and five more years is a great gift in hindsight.
The additional picks and prospects will help with the farm team and we could get lucky. |

I still don't get trading Vatanen. Who will we sign to play his position next year that's as good or better than he is? Would be nice if we could move Subban but he's blown any kind of value with how he's played. So now we're stuck with 9mil Subban for the next 2 seasons.
Our defense COULD look like..
Butcher-Subban
Mueller-Severson
Smith-Carrick
White, Walsh, Morrow... Jacobs.. Bahl..
Don't bring back Vatanen. We don't need him!

Also losing Gionta, Gomez, Rafalski, Niedermayer for free too hurt a lot. we never recouped assets from losing players in FA. Everybody needs to think about this that we were never getting a home run |

Maybe Im alone, but not way has Butcher even showed he deserves top pairing minutes.
Shero now has two 1sts.... he can dangle those for a great dman. Is there anyone in the 25 yr age that might be available?
Avs have too many D.... If I were Shero Id look into their pool. |

They didnt want a rental. Cant blame em either. I dont know how deep the draft is, not sure if it makes sense to deal top picks if no one is left to pick. |

You trade Vats because we will no longer be good in his lifetime and he will net you a good return.
Dont worry about who replacing him next year as no one does, we are not going to be good for a while so might as well have as many young pieces with upside as possible for when we finally are ready start moving forward. |

I dont think anyone clarified it for me but if the yotes win a round this year and he resigns does that mean the first next year is free to be a lottery one if thats how things play out? Or is there 0 chance of getting a lottery pick from this deal with how its structured ?
I know the first this year is top 3 protected... |

I’m not positive on this, but I believe only the first this year is protected. Two ways we’d get a lotto pick from them:
-If they win a round and Hall resigns and then they crash next season and end up with a lottery pick, we’d get that.
-If they fall out of the playoffs this year, wind up with a top 3 pick and our first gets pushed to next season, we’d get that pick regardless of where it is. |

We have WAY too many D that just aren't good enough in the defensive zone. Severson/Butcher/P.K. all have some major lapses. Hopefully Bahl keeps developing, but I think Nico just needs to pick up the phone, and call fellow swiss Sbisa and tell him to move from Peg to NJ. The guy is big/fast/and has a bomb from the point. He also hits. Playing bottom pairing minutes, he has 6 points in 20 games (not flattering, but he is lights out in his own zone while outproducing PK.....) We really need some responsibility in our zone, and we can't keep sheltering Blackwood forever. He is good, but will not have any confidence if he keeps being hung out to dry. |

Of course Butcher doesn't deserve top pair.. he's a bottom-pair puck-mover. My point is that THIS is how bad our D will look if we trade Greene and Vatanen and don't replace them with NHL talent. |

If Hall tests free agency and then signs with Arizona, does that count as re-signing? |

don't want them to lose? I think chances are slim Hall re-signs, and if he does then it'll probably be another 20th overall pick. I'd rather them bomb and get 1 top 10 instead of 2 top 20s. |
