I couldn't see that. Basically the Blues - who have designs upon repeating I would imagine - would weaken themselves at the D position to gain a top-9 speedster?
The only way the Leafs can really end up trading Barrie is if the wheels fall off and come into late January they are not even a bubble team. His $2.75m is just not replaceable with an equivalent asset if we're looking to make the playoffs; otherwise he'll be sold off along with Muzzin at the TDL for a couple of 1st round picks.
I think, if you really look at it, most of the defensemen we would want to replace Barrie are probably not someone that the team trading for Barrie would want to Part with. It means that it's a good defenseman who's under $6m. That's an asset you want to keep unless you're out of the playoff picture too, and not going to be able to afford to resign the asset. Is the acquisition of a top-9 speedster really the piece that makes you make that trade? - Monkeypunk
Good points.
His cap hit is key, gonna difficult to replace the talent at the cap hit via trade.
Unless they bring one of the kids up the rest of the year. |

Ya could.
Maybe.

Agree - a difficult almost impossible trade unless as Monkeypunk pointed out the eighteen wheeler goes off the cliff.

Me too, really seems to know the system already...( obviously when he’s played for Keefe I know ) - Garnie
Size, speed and good on ice awareness. What's not to like. Hopefully he keeps it up. I keep picturing a line of Hyman--Engvall--Mikahev. I feel like this could be a great shut down line. Engvall played some center in the AHL and did well with it. |

He's a keeper for sure. Makes me wonder why he wasn't up before this. The Babcock stubborn streak, perhaps. Anyway, third line looks pretty decent lately. Maybe Kerfoot has found a role now. |

Holl has been playing on the 2nd pair with Muzzin for a while now. He has also been the best all-around defender since the coaching change. - Steven_Seagull
I don't care if Holl has been stuffed into the 2nd pairing with Muzzin: he's not what the Leafs should want or need for that role. |

Leafs can trade Matthews for Alzner while they are at it. This trade proposal belongs on the Nucks thread though. I saw Sven Baertschi and Sutter for Gallagher there as a proposal last week. I think the Nuck's fan also thought the Habs should throw in a pick to even things up. |

I should have backread. I apologize for that. In terms of current goalies with a bit more unorthodox style, Bobrovsky might fit in, but not a lot of other effective goalies really come to mind. - Monkeypunk

The Los Angeles Kings have $11 million in cap space for next season tied up in Ilya Kovalchuk, Dion Phaneuf, and Mike Richards.
None of those people actually play for their team anymore. |

I don't think I'd lay that at the feet of Babcock.
You have to give credence to the fact that Engvall is waivers exempt.
He also did nothing to win himself a role coming out of camp. I remember him having a couple of good shifts in the preseason. That was it. The numbers show that. He was second worst in the preseason in possession metrics (above only Brooks), third worst in expected goals (above only Bracco and Kossila), and 5th worst in Scoring Chance ratio (ahead of only Harpur, Brooks, Bracco and Kossila).
It looks like he came up, he learned, and he applied what he learned, and he is now demonstrating it. The key for him will be to consistently demonstrate this work ethic and ability for more than 12 games. |

If I'm Ottawa, I'm figuring out how to trade for that Kovalchuk contract. $6.25m in cap space for free? You can polish all of the salary cap floors with that! |

Kovalchuk was put on unconditional waivers
Kovalchuk received a $2.65M bonus payment yesterday from Los Angeles and a $2.65M bonus payment on Sept. 15. By leaving the team and terminating his contract now, he gives up roughly $400,000 in salary this season and $4.25M next.

I bet Dallas signs him - only have to pay him $700K and they put him on a line with Radulov. |

seem so bad now for some reason. |

Perry could do the same as Spezza, probably a bit better.
