They never explained why he really deserted. It happened in 1 minute, just like that. The idea was good but not the delivery.

Way I interpreted it, he was kind of a rookie, and he realized they were killing innocents, so that traumatized him and he quit.

Face it, it's still the best (only?) backstory and motivation any of the new trilogy characters have.
