I think the idea of bringing back the old characters was a double edged sword.

Sure, it created big nostalgia moments for the fans but it also made the newer characters less interesting.... I don't really care about the new ones... I wanna know what happened to Luke! I wanna keep following Han Solo!

I've watched both the force awakens and the Last Jedi and I can only remember the names of Rey and Finn out of all the new characters.
