If they had traded him 18 months ago, they would have done very well.

Look at what teams have been willing to give up in the past couple of years. A perfect comparison is last year with Stone. Stone is the exact player everyone would want for a playoff run, and even with an extension, they were only able to get a really good prospect, a 2nd, and a dude. Why would Hall get more than that? There's too much parity in the league. Anyone who gets him still has a decent chance of losing in the first round. The cap hit is also irrelevant.

Hall also has the stigma of being on awful teams for his entire career. Who knows how much of that is his fault, but who really wants to give 72 million to a guy whose biggest success is gett his team a bunch of first overall picks.

4 useful parts and 72 million is way too much for Hall.

I think his biggest success is winning league MVP but ok

The only people who think Hall is a tier above Stone are Devils fans. If you asked every GM who they'd rather have, it'd probably be pretty evenly split, probably favouring Stone a little bit. Stone is the best defensive winger in the game and has point per game upside. Hall is a very good winger with one aberration of a year, not much more. Both Stone and Hall are in the all-star, not superstar tier.

And comparing Hall to Kovalchuk? Are you high? Hall had one phenomenal year and a bunch of pretty good years, and he's missed a lot of time. He has two seasons with more than 65 points and only 3 above 53. Kovalchuk was traded after 5 seasons of 40+ goals and averaging 80+ points.

If he wants a chance to win a Stanley cup, it wouldn't make sense to go to Florida or Arizona.

yah, well it’s also not up to him as to where he gets traded. NJ will get the best return they can without having Hall’s preferred destination in mind. if he doesn’t like ending up on the yotes or cats he’s free to field offers in the summer.
