Not related to this blog, but I'm finding writers' and commenters' takes from various outlets on the Jarry/Murray subject to be rather dismissive on the possibility that Jarry steals the job. Reasoning:

1. While Jarry will regress to a currently unknown degree, people act as if Murray is some beacon of consistency. He's been consistently inconsistent with stretches of brilliance and sub-par play for what is now a majority of his career.

2. Jarry was a higher draft pick. It obviously doesn't matter when someone drafted, and I'll concede that 2 cups warrants some hefty bias towards Murray. However some writers seem intent on dismissing the possibility of Jarry stealing the job as if the Pens drafted Murray with an early first round pick i.e. Fleury and are too heavily invested in him.

3. This same thing happened four years ago. You have to have a short memory span to not realize the legitimacy of this being Jarry's net in a month or two, considering the same thing happened a few years ago.

I would normally fall in the middle of the debate and say, "The best tender should play, but you don't trade Murray because the return on goalies is weak and it has obviously proved invaluable to have two capable goalies in the playoffs." Murray's pending UFA status is a wild card though. If this trend continues, I don't see any folly in the scenario of Jarry taking the starting role and the Pens looking to trade Murray.

He's actually a RFA after the season.

But I'm with you in the middle of this debate. I can see both sides and if the return is meh, then it is wiser to keep him. I briefly looked at teams who need goalies but couldn't come up with anything that made sense. Some teams like San Jose have already been burned by goalies who looked good for a while but have since fallen apart.

I think if/when Raanta is traded, then Murray is at or near the top of the good goalies who might be available. Just like I have trouble trusting Murray come playoff time due to his "consistent inconsistency," I think some playoff/bubble teams will have the same reservations about him. I probably helps that he's still restricted so he wouldn't just be a rental.

Sounds a lot like Matt Murray. Although he mostly just had a team infront of him putting up 5 spots every night. Jarry>Murray. Get rid of the bum before he’s making 9 million a year.

You do remember everyone's reaction to Murray when was called up right? Pretty identical to what's happening now with Jarry. There is zero reason to rush anything. The Pens are in a kush situation with their goalies. Let the season play out and move on from there.

I just have s terrible feeling trading for a Toffoli type will end up being a Galchenyuk. Then we will get rid of Galchenyuk and he will start to put up points. Trade Murray for a bonafide goal scoring wing.
- Grinder47

It's usually safer to get a guy who gets his points at ES than a guy who gets them on the PP unless you have that exact role. He usually won't score a ton more, but he probably will find a spot unlike a misfit PP guy like Galchenyuk.

Now if the team who gets Galchenyuk has an opening for a lefty PP specialist, he will do well.

Please, NO to Kovy. He is not what the Pens need.

I’m not saying that Kovalchuk is “the answer”, or that he’s even good anymore.

I am saying that if we could resolve our Jack Johnson and Nick Bjugstad problems by taking him on, it’s worth looking at.

This is a “least bad option” scenario.

That and Galch is a left-handed LW which the Pens don't really need and Toffoli is a right-handed RW which the Pens definitely need. I think Toffoli is faster, too.

I'd not trade Murray unless something unreal was presented as a return. I'm just thrilled that he wont be getting anywhere near 6mil a year now...or if he does its unlikely here. Of course if he were to become good all of a sudden and take this team deep or to another cup, I'd change my mind. He is a good insurance backup if jarry stumbles. Having said that..if murray doesnt get better and jarry stumbles...we are screwed....all trade options and values are lost...and so is the season.

Yeah, the Pens should focus on shutting him down to keep his trade value lower (for the Pens).

We’re the pens suffering from injuries like this when Murray started taking the net? I remember the team steam rolling with offense.

What about a puck-moving 2LD who can put up points? Or a winger like Radulov?

This, plus Toffoli could actually get a shot(pun intended)on the LW for the PP if we acquired him.

Yeah, this is something I wouldn't count on, but a possibility for excess value

I'll throw a hypothetical at you. If this was Fleury and Murray again would you trade Fleury for a 2LD or a winger like Rad?

Good question but there are some problems with the hypothetical. That team was better than this Pens team, it was definitely healthier, and, without looking, I'm pretty sure Fleury was playing better than Murray is now.

Murray was a big factor in their success down the stretch.

Also, no, they didn't have those injuries, but you can make a case that Jarry has it easy right now. The Pens are one of the top defensive teams in the league.

I don't know much about him other than he seems like a very productive, young, cost-controlled and contract-controlled player who keeps getting bounced from team to team and usually picked up or traded for nothing.

I've seen a lot of chatter AZ is the favorite with Blues second. Don't think it's done yet.
