The sarcasm isn't undetected - but when evaluating a guy like Barrie, that is what you look for. He's not really a dman, he's a rover.

Under Keefe in 10 games, he has 6pts (3 goals) and is -1.
Under Babs in 23 games, he had 7pts (0 goals) and was -11.

While I likened him to Gardiner, I would note that Gardiner has 8pts and is -17 so far this year on the Hurricanes who are +6 as a team at even strength.

So . . . it could be worse.

We’ve had a easier sched and our team was finally healthy, not sure it was just Babs. JMO

Yup.
January is the real test, that's the toughest Month left for the Leafs (or maybe April with the intense golf schedule).

Maybe there are human reasons you don't pay your rfa's who have won nothing boat loads of money?

SOME of them earn it even after they get paid.

Remember when people thought Matthews was better than Eichel. Those were good times.

Yeah because all -'s are just bad luck and happen just as a guy was about to get off the ice.

Sometimes, it actually does tell us something, particularly when it agrees with the eye test.

It's a poor stat if you know nothing about the team. To be fair, advanced analytics haven't really conquered the problem with any type of uniform measure either. But what you need is a weighted +/- that considers quality of competition, quality of linemates, quality of chance, and so on.

To me the poster boy for +/- being a poor stat was always Mark Fraser. He was +18 in 2012-13. Mark Fraser was never a good defenseman, but you'd have thought he was if you didn't know his deployment.

The schedule is irrelevant at this point because the season is lost. This ‘team’ (and i use that term loosely) ain’t making the playoffs. Time to get on the phone and see what you cant get for expiring contracts...

It's not just Babs, but . . . I will contend that if the Toronto Maple Leafs were coached by Mike Babcock these past 10 games, they would have been crushed by the Avalanche twice, smushed by the Canucks, beaten by the Blues, and not even in last night's game.

Babs' defensive style wasn't working and the players weren't playing for him. I think it would have been terribly exploited against the up tempo teams and the grinding teams.

As it is they are forging an identity and learning to retain possession and play a new style. There are going to be bumps along the way.

Again, they lost yesterday, but that game could easily have gone another way. It's not like Rittich didn't make some unbelievable saves himself.

Win Saturday and it’s a 3-1 road trip.

Game wasn’t that bad. Just a really bad 4 minute stretch in the 3rd. Clean that up and move on.

keep:
Rielly, Marner, Hyman, Matthews, Tavares, Mikheyev, Sandin, Liljegren, Andersen, Kapanen.
I would keep Moore, Gauthier and Timashov as well.

rest all assets that can be traded (of course not all will be traded, but Leafs should consider to use any of those in a trade).

Edm
Buff

No Wash or Bos or TB there...6 win-able games...likely can take 4 or 5.

Pretty easy stretch, if they can't make up ground there...well....

Not sure about that, Babs doesn’t allow stupid passes like Spezza’s last night ( probably why he didn’t play him ) and he requires the team play defense 1st.

I’m a big Keefe fan so I really don’t care who’s coaching but 106 points and 100 points says something about Babs.

We were all over the Flames but we didn’t really get too close to the net, take a look at the heat map and expected goals.

I think we’ll make the playoffs, we just need to be get a little more dirty and get to the areas

*dirty 🥰, fires up the hub*

Buffalo is playing well. Carolina is a good team. I'd still like to see 9 points out of that stretch.

If you look at the Leafs' remaining schedule, they have 49 games left. If they go 6-4 in all 5 sets of 10 games, that brings them to 94 points - so they'll need a couple of 7-3 10 game stretches to get to the magical 98 point mark.

I don't disagree with you, but the problem with the defense first approach is that this team as it is built will always suck at a defense first approach. Muzzin is basically the only guy on the entire team who thinks about defense, and half the time it seems to be a philosophical consideration, not the actual practice of defense.

A pass like Spezza's . . . it's a fast break, and the pass was errant. That said, Andersen should have had that shot by Frolik. Andersen gets a bye because he's played so well, but if Hutch had let that in, the rage would be palpable.

The style of the team should benefit the composition of the team. If the team is fast and creative, they need to learn to get the puck, keep the puck, and find ways to pressure the puck when they don't have the puck to get it back. They're not going to win by grinding. They're not going to win by hitting. They're not going to win along the boards.

I feel that Babcock had a style that suits certain teams, but not this one.

Maybe he should had it, pretty good location on almost every goal...and we just let them walk into those areas all the time, we don’t seem to get those chances often, when we did we scored...need more though. We barely deserved the Nucks win...not going to win many games allowing NHL guys time and space in front of our net, regardless of the tender.

And...no 4-6 or 5-5 set. That sounds nasty when you lay it out like that. An uphill battle for sure. Especially with so many teams in the same hunt, and the Metro teams doing so much better. Best bet for Leafs is the 2 or 3 spot in the Atlantic. 3rd in Atlantic MIGHT be lower than the 2nd WC....
