Question for Saturday's game: Can Freddy stop a beachball?

Those first two goals were horrific.

When Freddy plays well he gets 100% of the credit for "Stealing the game". Can he get blamed for losses?

Not when the team that is designed to outscore all of it's issues, only scores 2 goals, and their insanely highly paid players only pop up on the scoresheet when they want to.

You've gotta stop trolling other threads. The Leafs are going to struggle mightily to make the playoffs, and your prediction of the Leafs winning the Cup this year looks way off.

They have one of the worst looking PPs in the league depsite having 50% of their total cap on the ice.

- There's other goalies in the league without a few bad days?
- With the Leafs' backup issues, expect Freddie to play even if he's not ok
- Do you play your .918 goalie or your .876 backup with 0 wins?

I agree - Dubas thinks leafs are just fine in goal though..
People call Babcock stubborn but it seems that Dubas is worse..

(frank)ing Matthews... in a slump again
- Dozzer

He worked on a tricky new release this offseason.

You don't have to work when you have a tricky new release.

How did our all-world ( ) goalie look in the 3rd.

It is unbelievable.
Looks very much like a huge culture of entitlement surrounds this team.

That's the problem.

With the effort this team displays most nights, we need a goalie to be the best in the world. Andersen is an average starter, who can play very well for stretches in the regular season, but he can't carry this team forever. He won them the game in Vancouver and he poop the bed on 2 goals in Calgary. That won't cut it when your best player decides to take a maintenance day.

Neither team played great last night.
Leafs go into the 3rd with the lead.....and poop the bed in the first couple of mins

When you give the other team prime time scoring spots, you’ll usually lose.

We looked nice for periods of the game, I was drawing a parade route and was going to show it to Roger after the 1st 10 minutes.

He looked tired in the 3rd.

Almost like he's over worked.

You put a process in place for a reason. So you don't make dumb short term emotional decisions.

Overplaying freddy, playing him back-to-back .... it is wearing him out.

Definitely the one against Frolik was a bad goal that he should have had. I think on a normal night, he makes the save on the Gaudreau tip. It was higher on the ice, and if Andersen wasn't overplaying the Hamonic shot, he'd have been more able to react to the tip.

I think the first two goals - Hamonic's and Gaudreau's first were solid shots that found a good part of the net.

It's not like the Leafs crapped the bed. They had more High Danger changes. They had more Scoring Chances. They had more shots. They had more zone time. Rittich made some very good saves as well. It was a good game with a disappointing 2 minute window if you're a Leaf fan.

My takeaways:

The experiment is done. Kapanen is not good on his off wing.
Nic Petan is not an NHL player which is why no one has claimed him off waivers - twice.
Tyson Barrie makes far worse decisions than Jake Gardiner did, and he's even softer. He's better offensively and makes better offensive plays, but man. Man! The decisions that boy makes.
Tavares, Marner and Hyman looked great in the offensive zone. They had some poor defensive shifts.
I thought Matthews showed up for 10 minutes in the third. I thought Nylander showed up for the 2nd. It would be nice if that line would show up all game together.
Maybe I'm giving it too much credence as an excuse, but Kerfoot has not been anywhere near as good since the injury from Carter. I'm guessing the face shield and maybe pain (I have no idea) are interfering with his play, but he's been noticeably worse at everything - which drags down the third line.
Mikheyev looked real good last night. I liked about 45 minutes of Justin Holl yesterday, but he had a couple of shifts he'd want back.

Matthew got a good piece of that post though. I thought we outplayed them pretty badly, until I looked at the stat site...I better it off the pints for next game.

How long was the 5 on 3????

When you have Matthews, Tavarez, Marner, Reilly, Nylander....how do you NOT score on a 5 on 3???? Was it just one of those 20 second ones???

Dubas decided that Freddy is more than capable of playing 75 games this season.

The 5 on 3 drove me crazy. "Look at all the passing we can do!"

Literally . . . just get it to Matthews, and shoot the puck. Put someone in front of the net to distract the goalie. Keep your left defenseman high on the boards to collect wide shots that carom around. Then get the puck back to Matthews. Rinse. Repeat.

You have a 5 on 3, Matthews should have had 6 shots.

It sounds like I'm exaggerating, but I'm really not. The Calgary 3 man triangle was passive, and Matthews was available for most of those 90 seconds.

Hyman ALWAYS plays with energy, works the boards, back-checks...THAT's why coaches like to give guys like him the minutes. I can't blame the coach there....Now, last 3-4 minutes...down a goal or two. You gotta play Matthews and Marner darn near every second....6-2 no worse than 4-2 and you need your goal producers out there, defense-be-damned.
