I used to think Klef was going to be a top pairing guy but now I see him at best a 2nd pairing guy who can be used on the PP

I think Klefbom plays better when surrounded with support.

I think he plays more effectively when tasked with being the defensive conscience. I haven't looked into the stats, but I recall him looking his best alongside Schultz and he looked strong earlier this year next to Persson. It could be that I'm seeing isn't represented in the stats, but the impression I get is his mind isn't at its best when tasked with thinking too hard about offense.

They need to find a partner he can thrive with.

If there is any player that I would like from Buffalo, it's Olofsson.

You want obscene opinions???

Matt Benning is the Oilers most important defenseman right now.

Period.

Saying it and meaning it

RNH is our most important FW. Drai and CMD are knowns. Need RNH to have a chance at being successful. Won't go into Benning, just watch a game with him then without. (frank) any pretty stats. Benning is more important than klef, larss, bear, or nurse.

I've only been going to bat for the guy for 2 years His results are an indispensable contribution from a bottom pairing that wasn't exactly sheltered. Consistently outproduces his opposition and does so without any exceptional skills.

Gonna disagree with going to that extent, though

Side note while Benning is being brought up; his brother, Michael Benning (5'9 RD), is draft eligible and is posting some pretty crooked numbers in the AJHL. Numbers that are pretty much on pace to match Makar's pace from his draft year and draft-1 year.

Draft-1
Makar: 10G, 45A in 54 games
Benning: 10G, 51A in 60 games

Draft
Makar: 24G, 51A in 54 games
Benning: 7G, 33A in 27 games

Michael is keeping pace everywhere but goals in his draft year but is making up for it by outpacing his in assists and total points. He's taking a lot more penalties which- knowing Matt's style- might be an indicator of a more physical/physically-engaged player. For some context, I even compared those to Matt Benning's:

0G, 7A in 43 games
4G, 14A in 44 games
