I'd trade for him. I think he gets a bad rap but I like his game a lot. Maybe I don't watch him enough but I never thought he was soft. Kind of reminded me of Bure's attitude; not overly physical but when provoked he'll push back. Sometimes a bit dirty.

He's not a sandpaper guy, but Typical Leaf Fans don't like smooth skating and puck carrying. If a player is so skilled that he does that effortlessly they mistake it for not trying. They prefer a guy that sucks so everything he does looks excruciating.
