and give them more money for less effort and sacrifice to.
makes for excellent exciting hockey. - Bob_Zuruncle
They don’t get more for less. Just to stay in the league they have to train year round. Back in the day they all came to camp with beer bellies and sweated it out. Also the fact that nobody backcheked meant that you didn’t have to be in great shape.
Modern players work harder than ever. They deserve the money. |

Everything I've heard is that pro athletes now train and eat hardcore throughout the year, like Olympians, which wasn't the case in the past. A lot more competition now too since sports leagues draw from all over the world. It's a tough gig to get. |

cool, why stop? give matthews 20 million a year, he's the greatest of all time.
make it 50 million, he has to go to the gym and skate in his off time AND he has to eat salad. |

Well, they don't have to give him those amounts because he is under contract for less. In fact the amounts you suggest would not be permitted under the salary cap which was collectively bargained and is related to the business performance of the league, where the players are the product. |

I think it’s better than ever. Without all the hooking and holding the skill really shines through. And now that there’s no need to dress a knuckle dragger it means skill on all 4 lines. |

Why are you on a message board about it? When baseball lost my interest I just let it go. Complaining about it on forums never occurred to me. |

Why stop? Because the CBA won't let them go higher then 20%.
NBA elite get max ....every single time. NHL owners are actually doing really good (at keeping salaries down) relative to most other sports. |

Agree. The rule changes after the Dead Puck Era have worked. You can't sit back on a one goal lead. The talent level is great, the playoffs are great. I'm into it. |

Crosby was the pioneer of this era. He took an awful beating before they finally started to protect the stars a little bit. |

ratings for nhl are down, the game is boring to watch in all rinks no matter what game it is. look at the numbers yourself, they are horrible. |

Ratings for network television broadcasts across sports are down because there has been a revolution in how people consume entertainment generally. It's split off into many, many different options.
In this challenging environment the NHL is doing well enough that business analysts expect their next US tv deal to be much bigger than the previous one.
NHL revenue is at an all time high. They've expanded to 32 teams, with other markets available if current teams need to be moved.
But if you don't like it, don't watch. |

And in fact I hadn't checked for this season. So far US ratings are increasing. I'm gonna assume Canadian ratings remain robust because most of the teams are in the playoff race. |

Yep. The next US deal will be much bigger because live sports is still a unique way to deliver viewers to advertisers in the age of Netflix, Youtube, gaming and so on. It's appointment viewing in a way that network television isn't so much anymore.
